Box Office Numbers for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Just Got Bigger
It broke the record for highest grossing domestic opening night with $57 million, $120.5 million for its first day (which also breaks the record for the highest earning single day), and beat the standing box office record for the Sunday of an opening weekend with $61 million.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will help to cap off a relatively big year at the box office, which included the now vanquished blockbuster “Jurassic World”, leading to an unusual amount ofmajor box office successes for Hollywood.
And then there’s the fact that Pixar screenwriter Michael Arndt was originally working on the screenplays for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and eventually left the project, supposedly because he had other commitments.
It isn’t all doom and gloom: the film did manage the biggest North American debut of all time, according to studio estimates. That puts the film’s opening weekend gross of Jurassic World’s $524 million launch.
However, “The Force Awakens” has yet to open in China, the world’s second biggest film market. Almost half of moviegoers – 47% – paid extra to see the film in the more expensive formats.

Globally, “The Force Awakens” landed at $517 million after opening to $279 million overseas. It didn’t say anything about episode seven, leading us to ask if anyone else gets a Takodana vibe from Disney’s released concept art for land after seeing the new film?

Fans of the franchise also came out in record numbers over the weekend to be introduced to new characters like Daisy Ridley’s scavenger Rey, Adam Driver’s villainous Kylo Ren, and John Boyega’s stormtrooper turned good Finn.
The figures do not include India or Greece where the movie opens this week, or China, where fans will have to wait until January 9 to watch the seventh episode.
