Box-Office Results: Last Witch Hunter, Jem and the Holograms crash at box-office
What an incredibly frightful weekend at the box office for new releases.
None of the weekend’s flops will garner as a lot consideration as “Jem and the Holograms“, although, which opened to $ 1.3 million to grow to be one of many worst debuts of all time for a serious studio film opening in over 2,000 places. The Ghost Dimension, Jem and the Holograms, and Rock the Kasbah all opened on Friday, along with the nationwide expansion of Steve Jobs. There’s a silver lining, though, given that it opened in only 1,656 theaters, compared to around 3,000 for the previous Paranormal Activity film, pulled in $18 million overseas, and cost only about $15 million to make. That is by far the lowest debut for a “Paranormal Activity” film since the first movie, which doesn’t even count considering that it opened in only twelve theaters before word of mouth spread and it became a huge hit.
Though it wasn’t far behind The Last Witch Hunter on Friday, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension looks like it will wind up with less than $8 million through Sunday. With a budget of $80 million-ish, pulling in just $10 million domestically doesn’t justify those early sequel talks.
Matt Damon’s “The Martian” topped this weekend’s box office with an estimated $15.9 million from 3,504 theaters. Overseas, The Martian’s total has surpassed $180 million, and it has been granted a release date in China on November 25th. “Suffragette” from Focus only brought in $77K across its limited locations. With that comes an agreement to share a portion of the VOD sales with participating theaters up to 90 days from its theatrical opening.
The lackluster weekend at the box office could be the result of overcrowding, according to Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s senior media analyst. “Over the past month we’ve had on average at least three new wide release films entering the marketplace every week”, Dergarabedian said.
After a few weeks of encouraging gains at the box-office, movie studios were slapped with a bad weekend as several new films failed to connect with viewers.
As audiences decide and select the place to spend their leisure dollars, Dergarabedian additionally notes that there’s a handful of possible blockbusters on the best way with “Spectre”, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. Sony’s adaptation of the beloved children’s book series, playing in 3,501 locations, was also the leader of the pack when it premiered last weekend to .5 million.
