Box Office Weekend: Ride Along 2 Finally Derails Star Wars Juggernaut
The seventh installment of “Star Wars” passed the 850 million dollars mark this weekend and is continuing to firm up its position as the highest grossing film of all-time in North America with 851 million dollars through 31 days of release.
Whether we’ll see an updated version of the Star Wars The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary at a later date to include sections on these two characters remains to be seen.
In fourth place was the new release “Go Fighting”, a TV show spinoff that earned $12 million in its opening weekend. It earned US$29.5 million to take second place.
“Ride Along 2” raked in $41 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Day weekend, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
This is nearly £3 million more than the previous record-holder, Titanic.
Last week’s Oscar nomination announcements created a box office boost for those films honored.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” breakout stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega have been raving about the script of their next film “Star Wars: Episode VIII”, but their praises might have been premature since rumors have been circulating that the script is now being revised. Ride Along 2 made $7 million less compared to the original Ride Along. “Creed, ‘ a spin-off to the ‘Rocky” series, has grossed $136 million worldwide since debuting in November. The other new release in the top 10, the animated Norm of the North opened to a per-screen average of $2,837 and finished with $6.84 million. The space opera slid to third place with $25.1 million for the three days and roughly $30 million for the four-day period.
Rounding out the top five was Paramount’s hit Christmas comedy, “Daddy’s Home”. “The Revenant”, $39 million. 3. Ride Along 2 may struggle to reach $100 million due to its smaller than anticipated opening. “The Big Short”, $6.5 million. 9.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Sisters finally slipped some, down four spots to #9 with $4.4 million (four-day total of $5.1 million). The awards favorite has earned just under $9 million in Germany so far. “The Hateful Eight”, $4.4 million.
