Boxer Mayweather beats Berto, wins 49 straight bouts
Floyd Mayweather Jr. signed off from professional boxing as he had planned on Saturday, going out unbeaten and on his own terms as “The Best Ever” after improving his career record to 49-0.
“Consider this: what happens if Mayweather “retires” Saturday night, takes a year off of boxing, and then announces his return for one last historic fight?”
“You have to know when to hang it up”.
That said, fans of master craftsmen can kick back and indulge in one final Mayweather victory as he heads for retirement after solidifying his place as a once-in-a-generation talent with a unique approach that will be hard for future aspirants to replicate. Both dominant and defensive, he used all the tricks learned in a pro career that began in 1996 to take a unanimous decision over Berto and retain his welterweight titles in what he insists was his last fight.
It was a typical Mayweather fight.
“I don’t want to rank myself, but I am the best at boxing”.
According to Compubox, Mayweather connected on 232/410 (57 percent) blows while Berto landed just 83/495 blows (17 percent). He produced a trademark performance of speed and precision as the judges returned scorecards of 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111 in the 38-year-old’s favour.
The 36-year-old posted this video to Instagram DURING Mayweather’s fight, with the caption “What I do when I’m bored”, even throwing in a cheeky “Hehe” for the hell of it. “But he was just better”.
It was a stunning display of ring craft as he created yet more history in what has been a glittering career. “It’s official”, said Mayweather after the fight, via ESPN.
“I’ve accomplished everything”, Mayweather said. “He did a lot of little things to get me off my rhythm”.
“I’ve had a great career”.
De La Hoya also retweeted several people who complained about the boring nature of the fight, including one who said “TBE: Totally Boring Every time”, in a mockery of Mayweather’s preferred nickname.
I have seen marathon runners collapse from the sheer exhaustion, and Berto was closer to being knocked out by the exertion of the chase than he was by anything that Floyd threw. “I’ve had a great career”, Mayweather said.
“I am leaving the sport with all my faculties, I’m still sharp and smart”.
