Boxing Upset As Tyson Fury Defeats Wladimir Klitschko To Take World
In a major upset, British boxer Tyson Fury defeated long-reigning heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision today in Germany.
Fury’s in-ring taunts followed a buildup to the bout in which he dressed as Batman and serenaded Klitschko with insults.
The ringside judges scored the fight 115-112, 115-112, 116-111 in favor of Fury, who remains undefeated and probably would have gotten an even better score if it wasn’t for one point being taken off for a cheap shot from behind.
Wilder may have to wait in line for a shot at Fury, because he’s going to have to face Wladimir in a rematch due to the rematch clause he had in the contract.
“By the power of Jesus I won this in Germany tonight”, Fury said.
When Fury’s camp complained, the champion’s fists were re-strapped which briefly delayed the start of the fight.
Speaking after his dramatic victory, Fury testified, “I used my jab, I used my agility”.
“I know how good Wladimir is and Wladimir did not show how good he is [against Fury]”, said Vitali.
“I’m a fighter and I will take up all challenges”. “Klitschko has never fought anyone like me; a 6ft 9in switch-hitter who is as unorthodox as two left feet on a clown facing backwards”, he added. I want to be a great champion and I want to do it again [against Klitschko].
“I have worked hard everyday for this moment – it’s a dream come true”.
“I prepared well, but my speed was missing tonight and I didn’t expect the speed from him”, said Klitschko, who turns 40 in May.
Only seven Britons had previously been world heavyweight champions: Bob Fitzimmons (1897-99), Michael Bentt (1993-94), Herbie Hide (1994-95 & 1997-99), Frank Bruno (1995-96), Henry Akinwande (1996-97), Lennox Lewis (1993-94, 1997-2001, 2001-2003) and David Haye (2009).
The unbeaten challenger said: “I am absolutely delighted”. “I should have landed more right hands but I couldn’t find the right distance”.
The Manchester native, a former Irish heavyweight champion, produced a disciplined display which was completely at odds with his brazed and vocal pre-fight approach. “With that point off I thought he had got it. He kept turning around, turning away and pushed me down”.
