Boy, 10, Hospitalized With Brain Damage After Home was Fumigated
An expert with pest control told CBS12 that fumigators set up tents and use the chemical sulfuryl fluoride, to rid home of insects.
In mid-August, Peyton and his family left their Palm City home so it could be fumigated.
Peyton McCaughey is hospitalized with brain damage that his family believes was caused by poisoning from termite treatment chemicals.
New York Daily News reports that the Department of Justice has now opened a criminal investigation and the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services also issued a stop-work order against Sunland Pest Control.
Gribben said Peyton had trouble standing and speaking, so the family took him to a local clinic where a doctor suspected poisoning from fumigation.
Peyton does seem to have regained some of his personality and cognitive skills, though, Gribben added.
“It has become apparent that it will be much longer than weeks; but, hopefully it will be months, not years, of recovery time”, Gribben wrote.
“His eyes were rolling around”, Peyton’s uncle said.
The family of a 9-year-old boy plans to sue a pest control company.
Meanwhile, the family is struggling because both of Peyton’s parents have not been able to work while they stay by their son’s side.
Gribben puts the blame for his nephew’s illness on Terminix, who were not forth-coming about the chemicals used for the home’s fumigation.
“We are saddened to learn of this and our hearts are with the family”.
On Sunday, having learned of the story, running back Lamar Miller, defensive end Olivier Vernon and wide receiver Jarvis Landry visited McCaughey at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where McCaughey had been transferred.
