Boy Injured After Small Plane Crashes On California Beach
Beach-goers scattered when the plane began descending, but at least two people caught the dramatic crash on video.
The single-engine Piper PA18 experienced a loss of engine power while towing a banner and flipped over after it landed on the beach, according to the FAA.
According to NTSB records, there has been at least one death caused by a plane towing a promotional banner in the past.
The 23-year-old pilot was able to walk away from the crash, but the 12-year-old boy was taken to a hospital with a gash on his head, the station reported.
A dispatcher with the North County Dispatch Joint Powers Authority shed some light regarding the matter by mentioning that the injured person was taken to a children’s hospital in San Diego.
The light plane was put upright within minutes as officials made plans to have it towed from the beach.
Witness Darrel Hicks said beachgoers screamed as the plane tumbled out of the sky towards them. It hit the sand, flipped over, hit a kid in the head with the wing and three other people dove down.
A spokesperson for Rady’s says his condition is not being released. “He [pilot] is upset that he lost his airplane”. He must have lost all power, he was in total control. “Thank God it could have been a lot worse”, said Dean Nesbitt.
The owner of the plane says the aircraft is 15-years-old and hasn’t had prior problems. And videos of the plane crash have just been released to news.
