Bradford, Cox lead Eagles to 39-17 win over Saints
Missed opportunities started immediately for the Eagles.
Although Kelly and the offensive coaches will be pleased with the way he turned things around, it’s the surging running game that should draw the attention.
For that, they would not just have to defeat the New Orleans Saints, but to repel all doubts. But for the first time all season, the Eagles got the production out of DeMarco Murray they were hoping for. The Eagles played a great game today! “He did it a couple times and we failed, but the confidence, he was just trying to build the confidence in us”. I want him to be accurate 100% on every throw he passes.
“We probably gave up too many X-plays”, Kelly said.
“I’m going to give the credit to the back-end today”, Cox explained to the media after the game. “We were able to get to the quarterback”. He strip-sacked Brees twice, two of the four turnovers the defense forced.
Offensively, things were a bit more up-and-down. Murray, the marquee free agent signing this offseason, rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Kelly said there are no plans to replace him. Neither time did the Saints make them pay. “It all starts with us being able to run the football”. The team just isn’t that good right now.
“We needed it bad”, said Fletcher Cox, who had three sacks, forced two fumbles, recovered one and made a team-high six tackles. But he missed an extra point for the second time in two games since replacing injured Cody Parkey. However, nobody else on the offense had more than 36 receiving yards, and it’s clear that Brees’s only top options right now are Snead, Cooks, and whichever running back Payton calls for in the gameplan.
If you look at the basic stats, Brees hasn’t done poorly this season. You know, they scored the one where we were just misaligned.
“He was just a beast out there, but he’s been doing this for a while now, ” Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin said.
Bradford’s two-face game has become very concerning. Murray had his best day as an Eagle with 4.2 yards per carry.
It was a pretty good weekend.
“Probably never”, Cox said. He led all rookies in sacks in Andy Reid’s final year before struggling to acclimate himself to Bill Davis’s 3-4 scheme. He has four sacks for the season, the same number he had all last season.
That’s in large part because Cox had a game to remember.
Kelly also got a chance to watch video of Marcus Smith II, who got his first tackle with the Eagles and crashed into Brees, causing an interception.
Controversial Riley Cooper has found a home in Philadelphia, and he averages 16.1 yards per catch on eight grabs so far this season. Kelly said he wouldn’t “make a real big deal out of” what Bradford did. The Eagles won 39-17.
Coming into Week 5, the Philadelphia Eagles were one of the big disappointments early in the 2015 season. Only problem is, Mathews looked even better. He surely didn’t resemble a first-round draft pick. It took the Eagles four plays to go 81 yards for a tying touchdown. They have a two game winning streak as of right now on their preseason schedule.
The Eagles wide receivers need to learn how to catch the ball. At his best, Bradford was zipping passes into tight windows and moving the offense. Much more of a ball spread and more outside run plays. Heck, even EJ Biggers recorded a pass break up yesterday. He likely won’t practice much this week, but is expected to play Monday against the New York Giants. With the exception of Manning, the rest of the Giants are a flawed group.
But instead the Saints couldn’t find traction and actually trailed going into halftime when they should have at least been either tied or been up by a score.
Seattle’s D had allowed a grand total of only one field goal in the previous 20 offensive series, a run that started during a loss to Green Bay in Week 2 and covered victories over Chicago in Week 3 and Detroit in Week 4.
