Bradley Wright-Phillips set yet another MLS goal scoring record
The 3-1 lead looked to be enough but Jozy Altidore was there to save the day.
Sunday marked the regular-season rubber match between the two with each team already posting a victory at Red Bulls Arena.
Moving forward, Toronto FC are in an excellent position, with a two-point lead at the top of the East and a game in hand.
They also have Western Conference leaders FC Dallas in the sights for the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the first place team overall in MLS at the end of the regular season.
Toronto were again without leading scorer Sebastian Giovinco, still nursing quadriceps and adductor strains.
Toronto’s Ashtone Morgan, Mark Bloom, Jay Chapman and Tosaint Ricketts were unavailable through injury.
With Giovinco and Ricketts out, Jordan Hamilton started up front alongside Altidore.
Wright-Phillips didn’t have a sophomore slump in 2015, either.
Regardless what team you were rooting for, the first half was one to enjoy as both sides had scoring opportunities with the Red Bulls entering the locker room with a 2-1 edge.
Jozy Altidore scored his second goal of the game in the 86th minute as Toronto wrapped up a postseason spot. And just before the half, Michael Bradley seeming came out of nowhere to put Toronto within one. Now he hopes that the Red Bulls can keep up their stellar play and finally capture their first MLS Cup in team history. Eriq Zavaleta was stripped of the ball, allowing NY an odd man rush the other way. Altidore turned his defender at the top of the box before firing the ball past Luis Robles in the NY net to make it 3-3.
In fact, the Red Bulls went out and took one of their patented two-goal leads in the opening 31 minutes.
Facing a two-goal deficit with half an hour to go, TFC looked like they were going to concede top spot in the Eastern Conference to the New York Red Bulls.
Altidore also scored on a free kick in the 68th minute. “I hate to bring it up but this is the second time in its 10-year history that this team qualified for the playoffs, so it’s important”. I note that most of the points NY scored in the matches at home and on the road in NY and did won only two matches out of 15 played. They now have a 12W-9L-9D record on the season.
