Brady powers Patriots in playoff win over Chiefs
If the Patriots win, they will advance to the AFC Championship game. They allowed Tom Brady to pick apart the Chiefs with underneath routes to Edelman, who was too quick, even nine weeks removed from a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot, for Kansas City’s 6-foot-3 Sean Smith and 6-foot Marcus Peters.
KOIN’s Stan Brock chatted with Facebook fans during halftime of the game.
The defending champions would play in Denver on January 24 if the Broncos win, or at home if it’s the Steelers. You can join the conversation by liking the KOIN 6 Facebook page. The victor of that game goes to the Super Bowl. The NFL suspended Brady the first four games of the 2015 regular season, but Brady had the suspension lifted by a federal judge less than a week before New England’s regular-season opener. Boom-boom-boom. Brady to Edelman for 11 on third-and-10.
Instead, Harmon made a play to intercept the pass. Instead of taking over at midfield, the Patriots would have the ball at their own 23-yard line.
In the first half, the Patriots were able to put up two touchdowns, one being an eight yard toss to Rob Gronkowski and the second being a one yard run, while the Chiefs could only get close enough to kick field goals.
After a second quarter controlled mainly by the Chiefs, it was Brady who struck for the Patriots, carrying the ball for a long gain down to the goal line, before punching it in on the quarterback sneak on the next play. Belichick reached the conference title game for the 10th time, tied with Tom Landry for most all-time.
Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald ran in for the winning touchdown in overtime to give the Cardinals a 26-20 victory over Green Bay on Sunday after an extraordinary finish to an National Football League playoff game that will be remembered as one of the classics.
The rest of New England likely agrees, and for now the Patriots should be glad to have an important piece of their offense back and the difference was obvious.
Entering the Patriots’ 27-20 victory over the Chiefs, Bill Belichick hadn’t seen his team eclipse 100 yards on the ground in more than a month. Brady completed 28 of 42 passes for 302 yards, including those two touchdowns to Gronk.
The Patriots’ only remaining active linebackers are starter Dont’a Hightower and backups Jonathan Freeny, Darius Fleming and Dekoda Watson. With New England facing a second-and-12 in the final minute, he caught a pass that deflected off Kansas City’s Tamba Hali for 12 yards for a clinching first down.
“No. Just knew I had to get out there and get ready and be with the boys”, Gronkowski said.
And there was the familiarity of the Patriots going four and five wide, dissecting a great defense, as they did in the 2014 playoffs, and legitimately refusing to run the ball.
After going undefeated in their first 10 games, the Patriots went 2-4 in their last six.
The Chiefs got the ball first to start the second half and drove to the Patriots’ 30. The play above was ruled not a touchdown upon review, despite many thinking Brady was in. From 16 yards out, he hit Gronkowski for his second touchdown of the game to make it 21-6. On 1st and 10 from the NE 10 yard line, Chiefs quarterback ALEX SMITH (29 of 50 for 246 yards, 1 touchdown pass and no picks) found receiver ALBERT WILSON (5 catches for 57 yards and 1 score) for a 10 yard touchdown near the right middle corner of the end zone.
