Brady takes responsibility for loss
After blowing a 14-point lead for the second straight week, the Patriots snapped out of it for a late charge in the final minutes. The special teams captain has been battling minor injuries all season, though he’s yet to miss a game. The Patriots have lost back to back games for the first time since 2012. The turnover led to a 12 play drive maximized by a 10-yard touchdown reception by Jordan Matthews giving the Eagles a 35-14 lead.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady after his team for the second week in a row when they went down to Philadelphia.
Brady made it a 14-point game on a 14-yard pass to Scott Chandler, then the Patriots recovered an onside kick. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski tossed the football to Nate Ebner who inexplicably attempted a dropkick onside kick. Bradford completed 14 of 24 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. “We’re very proud to win this game”, he said. Jenkins picked it off at the goal line and ran it back the distance (officially it was 99 yards). The Patriots looked as if they were caught off guard in this game, but don’t expect it to happen again this season. It’s certainly hard to win when you play the way we played the game yesterday.
It was uh, so deflating, if you will.
That tied the game. Entering Sunday, the Eagles’ defense had given up the 13th-highest passer rating to opposing quarterbacks in the National Football League, and was trending downwards. It was ruled an incompletion.
If there is one thing that Bill Belichick and Tom Brady don’t like to do. The collision left them flat on their faces at the 35-yard line. Something tells me the Eagles’ website will be able to handle that traffic.
CHIEFS 34, RAIDERS 20 (at Oakland, Calif.) – The Chiefs’ Jeremy Maclin had two touchdowns catches after fourth-quarter interceptions and Tyvon Branch returned a third interception from Derek Carr for the game-clinching score. It cut the deficit to 14-7 with 4:04 left in the first half. I don’t put a whole lot of stock in the Patriots’ last two touchdowns, since they came when the Patriots were down 21 points; desperation points aren’t indicative of a team’s offense. Maragos charged through an opening in the middle and blocked the punt.
The Patriots were stunned. This game would be more of a scrimmage, allowing the Patriots to pad their stats and get back on track after a loss to the Broncos last week.
Playing 47 percent of the Eagles’ offensive snaps, Austin had just 13 receptions (on 31 targets) for 224 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles were alert, though, and pounced on the ball at their own 41-yard-line.
Sproles had two lugs for 14 yards, Murray one rush for seven yards.
The Patriots had a chance to run out the clock, but Brady was sacked and New England was forced to punt with 15 seconds remaining. Clearly, Austin wasn’t getting enough playing time here for him to do anything, and since he was only on a one-year deal, he probably wasn’t coming back anyway. Darren Sproles and Kenjon Barner got the bulk of the carries against the Patriots.
Then the old Eagles offense showed up.
The Eagles made a few big changes that contributed to this win.
If there is one thing that we need to learn to accept, it is that officiating will always be a constant issue and there is no other way around it. Referees will make poor calls, miss calls, but even at times make the right call.
Then ason Peters had a false start. It was the fourth time in two years the Eagles returned a blocked punt for a score.
