Braves’ big 7th inning propels them over Marlins
Fernandez, who is 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 43 innings this season, pitched five innings, giving up two runs and four hits last night in a 6-3 loss to Atlanta.
Bourn spent one and a half seasons with the Braves, hitting. “We’re not a home run-hitting club, and when you get chances with men in scoring position we have to capitalize on that”. We’ve got to step up. That’s why he went feet-first to beat out an infield single on Friday.
The Atlanta Braves look to keep rolling after winning five of their seven games. It was McKirahan’s first major league win.
These Braves were averaging 2.5 runs while dropping 11 of 14 games before the Marlins arrived for this four-game series.
The two will try to extend those runs while leading Atlanta to its first four-game sweep of the Marlins since May 15-18, 2006.
After the stressful inning, manager Dan Jennings let him come out for another quick, nine-pitch outing before pulling him for the remainder of the game. He also made a diving stab at first that doubled off Christian Yelich in the top of the inning. Pierzynski drove him in with a solid single to center.
By contrast, the Braves didn’t waste Maybin’s double in the bottom of the inning.
• Streaking thirtysomethings: Braves veterans Nick Markakis and A.J. Pierzynski both are working on double-digit hitting streaks (and to me, that’s when a hitting streak generally becomes worth mentioning, when it reaches 10 games).
Despite continuing to pitch respectably, Shelby Miller hasn’t earned a win since his near no-hitter against the Miami Marlins on May 17.
Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez is on his way to Florida to see a doctor after about stiffness in his right shoulder. “We’re going to work on that tonight”.
The Miami Marlins can not escape the bad news train.
The Braves took an 8-5 lead with three runs in the fifth against reliever Adam Conley.
Fernandez threw 112 pitches in his previous start when he struck out 10 in six shutout innings against San Diego.
NOTES: Atlanta put 2B Jace Peterson back in the leadoff spot and moved RF Nick Markakis back in the No. 3 hole. The Marlins gave C J.T. Realmuto (bruised left hand) a second consecutive day off….
