Brazil fines Volkswagen US$13m over emissions cheating
Volkswagen has admitted that a wide range of 2016 MY petrol-engined cars from VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT have Carbon dioxide emissions that are not correct. For the January-to-October timeframe sales were off 4.7 percent ot 4.84 million. If the auto thought it was in a test “mode”, emissions got a lot better.
Many owners are angry at the company for cheating because they paid extra for the cars to be environmentally sensitive without losing peppy acceleration.
According to the minutes from a 2012 meeting of the European Union’s approval authorities, “a manufacturer could specify a special setting that is not normally used for everyday driving” during test procedures. In the VW case, we did our own testing and discovery.
VW has said it hired advisory firm Deloitte and United States law firm Jones Day to investigate under what circumstances the company installed software into diesel cars that changed engine settings to reduce emissions whenever the vehicle was put through tests.
“In Western Europe, dome nations imposed a temporary freeze on sales of diesel cars which affected sales”, VW marketing chief Jürgen Stackmann said in a statement.
Volkswagen will also now have to share detailed information about the production and sales of vehicles in Brazil, which are concerned by the violation, similarly to actions taken by the USA government. Automakers responded to this finding by temporarily stopping sale of the models. Automotive News reported today that global deliveries of VW cars dipped 5.3 percent in October to 490,000 cars.
The Volkswagen Group has established a November 30 deadline for all those inside the company that can shed more light about the issues that have caused all emissions-related scandals.
Its market capitalisation has also been slashed by almost 40 percent since September, when the scandal first broke.
