BRENDAN RODGERS: It was an honour to manage Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers, who had been appointed as the manager of Liverpool in the summer of 2012, had earlier been sacked on Sunday, 4 October, after a series of poor results this season. Frank de Boer, the Ajax coach, linked himself with the Anfield job last week but Klopp is seen as the ideal appointment providing he can be persuaded to end his sabbatical for the chance to revive Liverpool.
Klopp is understood to be open to the idea of a move, with reports suggesting that talks between Liverpool and his representatives were progressing well. Surely they directors at Liverpool who made the decision to axe Rodgers already had a replacement lined up?
It appears Reina and Rodgers still aren’t on great teams, and the 32 year old ‘keeper tweeted today, in a somewhat cryptic manner, about the situation at his old club today. “I think that a younger and potentially hungrier manager in Jurgen Klopp would be the best fit for Liverpool in their current predicament”.
Klopp is the favourite for the job with Sky Bet ahead of former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, and the former Borussia Dortmund boss has been backed for the role by a trio of former Liverpool players.
Frank De Boer, who has been managing Ajax since 2010, has also spoken in the past of his desire to manage in the Premier League.
Would you take Reina back at Anfield, Liverpool fans? “It has been both an honour and a privilege to manage one of the game’s great clubs for the last three years”, read the statement.
“I have no axe to grind with Rodgers and I do not think he should have been sacked”.
“A manager like that out of work is maybe why they pressed the button”, he said.
The Telegraph say the club will aim to compensate Rodgers to the tune of £7 million but that it is “well below” what the ex-Swansea boss can lay claim to.
While he failed to utilise the squad at his disposal properly this season, it’s a youthful and exciting one which Jurgen Klopp, the man widely expected to replace him (via BBC Sport), can potentially develop.
“Brendan has dedicated his entire professional life to developing players and teams, and I am certain that with his knowledge and passion for the game it won’t be too long before he finds a new challenge”.
“They can go out and buy the best players in the world”.
