Brendan Rodgers left frustrated after Sion earn a draw at Liverpool
Everton go in to the game a point ahead and four places above Liverpool in the table and could move into the top four with a second home win of the season.
Everton host Liverpool at Goodison Park on Sunday, with the Toffees a point clear of their rivals in the Premier League standings after seven matches.
Martinez has acknowledged the importance of his Everton side getting a win against the Reds at Goodison Park on Sunday, but feels thoughts of the record between the clubs over the past few years should not be weighing on his players’ minds. The Belgian has not kept a clean sheet since the end of August and it is highly unlikely, especially with Liverpool’s defense struggling, that he will keep a clean sheet against Everton.
“The story of the game was obvious; we started well, got in front, gave away a poor goal and then created chances and should have maybe won a lot more comfortably but unfortunately ended up drawing and a bit frustrated”.
Everton came back from 2-0 down to beat West Brom 3-2 on Monday in the league and, although there little separating the teams going into the derby, Rodgers has been under increasing pressure. I will do my best with what I am working with and our notion is to win the game.
“If Liverpool don’t qualify this season for the Champions League, I’m sure he will be the most in-demand player in Europe”, said Luiz. “We will always take the favourite tag”, said Rodgers.
“It is normal and it goes with not winning games”.
“But if you look at the amount of money Liverpool have spent in the last three seasons, maybe you would say they are favourites”, the Spaniard told reporters at his pre-match news conference.
Back Everton to win this one and make it five games unbeaten.
The visitors will be boosted by the availability of Daniel Sturridge after he was rested for their European draw on Thursday after stealing the show with an excellent brace against Villa. I am not anxious and that is not being arrogant, or having been given any assurances.
“I think the pressure is the nature of the game, ” he said.
If confidence is through the roof, Martinez will be hopeful of securing his first Merseyside derby victory at the fifth attempt.
