Brewers’ Jimmy Nelson to spend a second night in hospital
“Just a head contusion, and they just want to make sure everything is 100% before he walks out the door”, said Brewers manager Craig Counsell.
Nelson was facing Cardinals outfielder Tommy Pham in the third inning Thursday when the incident happened.
Nelson was down on the mound for a minute before he walked off the field. With the speed of the ball coming back at Nelson, he had no chance to make any type of move. Pham reacted immediately, visibly wincing once he realized what happened.
Eventually Nelson walked off the field under his own power.
Hospitalized: He was sent for tests and the Brewers announced a Connecticut scan showed nothing more than a bruise.
“I think he escaped without any serious harm”, manager Craig Counsell said. “If we’re playing good and we get beat, I’m OK with that”. We’re lucky and thankful that’s all it is, ‘ Counsell said before the Brewers played Cincinnati.
Nelson is listed in the Brewers’ probables on his normal day, which would be Tuesday opposite the Cubs’ Jake Arrieta at Wrigley Field.
“I don’t think it’s easy for anybody to see”, Counsell said. There were not many initial updates on Nelson and while he appeared to be doing well right after, our thoughts and prayers go out to Nelson as we wish him a speedy recovery.
Nonetheless, Counsell is confident that Nelson will pitch again this season and doesn’t expect the accident to affect the right-hander’s confidence.
Today’s TMJ4’s Lance Allan says that’s part of the issue, but he also says the game has evolved and the players have to do the same.
