Brewers recall RHP Zach Davies to start against Reds
And that was just one of many things that went wrong for Cincinnati on an all-around bad night. Yet, somehow, Ross Ohlendorf prevailed, getting Braun to pop up to shortstop Zack Cozart to preserve the win and earn his second save of the season. 467 with five homers and 15 runs batted in against the Reds this season.
First, there was some controversy. Plate umpire Quinn Wolcott said Lucroy had tipped the ball.
His homer came one pitch after manager Bryan Price apparently argued that Lamb had struck Lucroy out. “I’ve just got to stay with the program”.
Sampson went on to set a career-high for relief innings with a bullpen-saving four, also the longest outing by a Reds relief pitcher this season.
“I just thought, 26 pitches (by Cingrani) and it wasn’t coming easy, and I would’ve hated for him to get the loss in a situation where he didn’t have his best stuff”, Price said.
Cincinnati Reds’ Adam Duvall (23) celebrates with Jay Bruce (32) and Anthony DeSclafani, after scoring on a two-run double by Tucker Barnhart off Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Carlos Torres during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Friday, July 15, 2016, in Cincinnati.
Tomorrow the Brewers (38-50) send Jimmy Nelson (5-7, 3.62) against John Lamb (1-6, 5.43) for the Reds (33-57).
Gennett led off the eighth with his second hit, a single to left, but Braun had his third straight infield groundout, Lucroy his third straight strikeout, and Carter fanned for the second time to leave Scooter at second. Midldlebrooks took the bouncer two steps from third but went to second to try for two instead of stepping on third and going to first.
Lamb recognized that the string of bad starts could jeopardize his spot in the rotation. “I hope I continue to have the ball every five days”. Garza allowed four runs on six hits in five plus innings to fall to 1-3. In 19 games (16 starts) this year, the right-hander is now 4-6 with a 4.35 ERA and he has only given up seven hits per nine innings over 101.1 innings.
“I missed two pitches earlier in the at bat to hit”, he said. Each of the top seven batters in the order scored. Milwaukee looks to snap three game losing streak. They won 10-2 at Miami on May 10…. RHP Chase Anderson (4-10) is the Brewers’ scheduled starter in the opener of a three-game series in Pittsburgh. The Reds have lost all four games.
RHP Zach Davies will make the start for the Brewers on Sunday. He’s made seven quality starts.
Nelson (6-7), 0-4 in seven starts since beating the Reds, 5-4, on May 29, allowed six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over seven innings.
