Brewers trade Gomez to Mets
The New York Mets have owned the headlines this week ahead of MLB’s trade deadline, acquiring several players and backing out of a deal for a former All-Star. It would be bold to say they don’t need him, but Bobby Parnell has been nothing short of bad since his return from Tommy John surgery. 500 yet came within a game of winning the World Series. Mets GM Sandy Alderson told reporters there wasn’t a deal and blamed it getting out of hand on social media. “They’re not. They’re human beings who have emotions, and this kid’s upset”. Cue the “there’s no crying in baseball” jokes.
Seven years after trading him away, the Mets have reportedly re-acquired outfielder Carlos Gomez in a non-waiver Trade Deadline deal, according to a source. “We monitor our players closely”.
Gomez’s agent, Scott Boras, said that Gomez has never had a hip injury, and though he had an MRI in June, “his hip structurally and tissue-wise is clean”.
“Whatever has been speculated over the course of the evening has not and will not transpire”, Alderson said.
When he came out to shortstop for the top of the eighth, Flores began to cry as he warmed up.
As it turned out, he wound up being packaged with centerfielder Carlos Gomez in a blockbuster deal that sent the pair to the Houston Astros less than 24 hours later. “It was hard”.
Murphy had said on Wednesday that he pulled possible trade candidates Matt Kemp and Justin Upton in the middle of the game in part to “give you guys something to think about”. Collins sent Flores back out to his position because he was not informed of any swap. They were very good to me since I got drafted and in the development of my career. “For what?’ I didn’t know”, Collins said, incredulous. “It’s an unfortunate situation, whatever has been speculated over the course of the evening, has not, and will not, transpire”.
After six straight losing seasons, the Mets are in a pennant race.
Colon allowed singles to the first three Padres he faced, leading to two runs by the end of the first. Fiers, 30, was 5-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts with Milwaukee this season. He pitched eight innings in three of those four contests, most recently when he blanked the St. Louis Cardinals on four hits Tuesday in a 4-0 victory.
Or, as Padres manager Pat Murphy put it: “Twizzler?” “We have a chance to win this year”. Ross (7-8) hadn’t given up a homer since April 28, a span of 100 innings. Collins said. “Do it with (stuff) like that going on during the game”. We have a chance to win next year.
Fiers is a smaller addition, and his role with the Astros will likely be in the bullpen if they hold onto him, though he could also slot into the back of the Houston rotation.
The Mets had a good scoring opportunity in the fourth, but couldn’t take advantage of it. Kelly Johnson and Duda walked, but Michael Conforto struck out, Kirk Nieuwenhuis lined out and Flores went down swinging. “He’s a guy that’s locked in”. Colon’s start only worsened from there.
But Bobby Parnell yielded another run in the sixth.
There were a few people who really knew what was going on all along. He stayed out at shortstop until the ninth inning, looking like he was reliving the last 20 minutes of Toy Story 3 in his mind.
