Brey expecting partisan IU crowd at Crossroads Classic — MEN’S BASKETBALL
IU rocked in a three with just 1:10 to go to make it a one-point game once again.
The first is the team that won the Maui Invitational after beating then-No. In the past two games against Ball State and DE his 16 total minutes are the fewest in any two-game stretch this season. “It’s a big game for us”.
That game, Notre Dame saw a 16-point second half lead disappear, falling to IN 80-73.
As Glenn and Stacey Murphy Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey closes in on the all-time record for coaching wins at the University of Notre Dame, Fighting Irish Media will be highlighting 18 of the top moments from the Mike Brey era.
Saturday’s game between the Irish and the Hoosiers is the 72nd match-up between the two IN basketball powerhouses, IN which the Hoosiers lead the all-time series 49-22. Things got worse in this game before they got better.
And like his predecessor, it hasn’t always been abundantly clear to Miller just how “important” McRoberts could be.
In the first 8:26, IN scored 10 of its first 11 points IN the paint while holding the Irish to a 4-of-11 (36.4) mark from the floor.
The Irish chose to buckle.
Irish forward Austin Torres, who played just two minutes, missed two free throws with less than a second left in regulation and tied at 65. McRoberts made a pass to Morgan, who finished with a dunk for the go-ahead basket. We’ve had a couple here and there, and then we’ve had some guys that haven’t played well, and then certain guys that were playing well aren’t.
First, with the Hoosiers trailing 77-74 with under 15 seconds to go, Morgan drove into the lane and hit a tough runner, absorbing contact for an and-one. Notre Dame led by 13 early in the second half and still led by eight, 63-55, with 2:51 remaining in regulation following two free throws by Colson.
This time, the results proved disastrous for the Irish. For us, you’re playing a Big Ten team. Luke Recker led IU with 27 and AJ Guyton added 17.
As the 2016-17 Indiana men’s basketball season figuratively caromed into a side ditch off of Indiana Highway 37 last January, Zach McRoberts was caught up in the crash.
IN trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half after TJ Gibbs hit a 3-pointer to put the Irish on top 28-14 with 5:14 to play.
“We were sharp enough to finish it off”, first-year IN coach Archie Miller said.
“We’re moving on to (IPFW)”, Miller said.
They will follow game one of the Crossroads Classic which features Purdue and Butler.
Behind for almost 34 minutes and never ahead by more than two points until the final seconds, the Hoosiers somehow beat a Notre Dame squad ranked 18th in the nation, a team that won the Maui Invitational and a team led by Bonzie Colson, the Atlantic Coast Conference pre-season player of the year. Both teams are 3-3 overall, and IN holds a 2-1 lead over Notre Dame IN head-to-head matchups during the tourney.
Ten games into the season, first-year IN coach Archie Miller sees a lot of things that he likes about this team. “You’re going against Duke. Then I saw Zach got it, and I just ran off”, Morgan said. “And this year we have played away from our building a lot”. Two days after IU plays Notre Dame it will host Fort Wayne on Monday. When it was all said and done, the Hoosiers scored six points in the final 11 seconds to flip a three-point deficit into a three-point win.
“He beat us up”, Brey said of Morgan. “But, God, did he beat us up, and he was fabulous”.
If Farrell and Gibbs can replicate their performance against Delaware, Notre Dame should handle IN quite easily, as the put up 24 and 21 points respectively. “This was a team win against a very good team”. Miller said Johnson worked tirelessly this week to make up for his poor showing against the Cardinals.
The one positive for Brey was his bench production.
Notre Dame had earned its place in the NCAA Sweet 16 behind the power of two “driving forces”.
“I tried to go back to the drawing board and see where I was making some mistakes”, Johnson said. “There’s a lot more confidence in how we do things and what we do, and we’ve being able to establish our style for longer stretches and we’re able to play harder for longer stretches. [Harvey] gave us good minutes, and Mooney gave us good minutes, as we’re still trying to figure out who comes off the bench for us”. Notre Dame freshman wing DJ Harvey hit a mid-range jumper on his first offensive possession of the game.
