Brian Elliott: New starting goaltender in Calgary
Elliott is under contract for one more season at a rate of $2.7 million.
“To me, he plays in the guts of the game”, Treliving said.
They will also get a conditional third round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, depending on if the Flames sign Elliott to a long term.
The Calgary Flames made a splash during the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft selecting a highly coveted prospect and trading for a proven goaltender. The U.S. National Development Program product finished fifth in OHL scoring during the regular season, posting 30 goals and 107 points in 57 games.
He was impressed by Treliving and the management ranks he came upon and says he heard glowing reviews about the organization from family as well as his agent.
As busy as they’ve been, the Flames still need to sign Gaudreau and Monahan, consider unrestricted free agents, and hire assistant coaches to the staff of Glen Gulutzan, who was hired to replace Bob Hartley on June 17. By dealing Elliott out of the system, the Blues manage to keep Allen as their protected goaltender moving forward without worrying about potentially losing Elliott for nothing.
-In a move to clear the cap space of Pavel Datsyuk, who bolted for the KHL with a year left on his National Hockey League contract, Detroit sent its No. 16 overall pick (defenseman Jakob Chychrun) to Arizona for depth center Joe Vitale and the Coyotes first-round (No. 20) and second-round picks (No. 53 picks) in the 2016 draft.
“We’re happy with it as everybody is right now”, Treliving said of the draft.
