Brian Williams Returns to Cover Pope Francis Visit
Williams’ fall from grace at NBC came after he misrepresented, during a newscast, events that occurred while he was in Iraq in 2003.
Williams received a six-month suspension in February after admitting he embellished events that occurred in 2003 while he was covering the war in Iraq.
“Thank you, Anne. Grab your personal belongings”, Williams said.
Mr. Lack responded that he had the flawless fit. This is really one of his strengths as opposed to, say sit-down interviews with heads of state. “They can turn on the TV and come to their own conclusions about Brian”.
Williams has an opportunity to piece together his career again, provided that he does not repeat his past mistakes, said Tompkins. Or will Williams prove that his failings were minor, not a fatal blow?
It’s not clear what kind of news Williams will tackle after the pope leaves; if he covers the 2016 presidential election, there is probably one person who won’t be too keen to talk to him.
Williams, following a grueling suspension from NBC News, starts tackling breaking news for MSNBC on September 22. There is no guarantee that the transition will be smooth.
Williams’ executive producer at NBC’s “Nightly News” who remained when Williams was suspended and Lester Holt got the gig – was relegated this week to executive producer in charge of afternoon news coverage at MSNBC. Well, on Tuesday, Williams will be starting at a new job at MSNBC, the cable channel.
There’s the possibility that Williams returns to NBC in another role.
After a brief set up about the pope, Williams threw the story to correspondent Chris Jansing at Andrews. He looks forward to finding himself in this role. Williams said a Secret Service agent tipped him off about where to stand in order to meet the pope.
His appearance Tuesday is both a beginning and an end. His daughter, Allison Williams, was married in Wyoming Saturday night. At one point, Mr. Williams stumbled over a word.
“Do news. Don’t do personality, don’t be a talkshow guest, don’t be any of that”, he said. In that sense, it is a smart, strategic move.
According to a spokeswoman, he won’t be appearing at all on the main NBC network. Each of them has got to define themselves.
There’s tumult at NBC News.
In a subsequent interview with Stars & Stripes, Williams apologized, saying he had “misremembered” what happened. Mr. Lack said that when he arrived he was not up to speed with where BC was, what it was or how it was doing, noting that he had been more focused on foreign, financial and business news. It is already a ratings-challenged cable network that was in the midst of overhauling its daytime coverage.
Over the summer, MSNBC canceled its 3-5 p.m. ET block featuring “The Cycle”, “Now with Alex Wagner” and the “Ed Show”, replacing the shows with straight news. He called on a team of NBC News personalities and experts – including Kate Snow, Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell – to discuss mundane details, such as the pope’s age, health and love of ice cream, as well as the broader political, security and social implications of the visit. He’s going to be there to help prepare the network and viewers for the visit of the pope.
“We are used to the big USA dreadnoughts”, Williams said accurately and drolly about the armor-plated giant limos and Chevy Suburbans in which our leaders may travel.
