‘Bridge of Spies’ and ‘Carol’ lead Bafta nominations
In 2015, BAFTA main category winners mirrored the Oscars in all but the best film and best director sections (the Brits went for Boyhood over Birdman in both), with Redmayne, Julianne Moore, J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette bagging both.
Some surprising omissions included Jennifer Lawrence’s latest David O. Russell collaboration Joy, which failed to secure any nominations at all, and Charlotte Rampling’s universally praised performance in 45 Years which was overlooked.
And rising star Alicia Vikander pulled off a coup with nominations for both leading actress and supporting actress.
“Spotlight”, a film about the investigation into Catholic Church abuse, completed the nominations for best film, and earned nods for original screenplay and supporting actor for Mark Ruffalo. Also nominated in the best movie category are Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Revenant” and “Spotlight”.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” landed seven nominations though in all the technical categories. Amy, Cartel Land, He Named Me Malala, Listen to Me Marlon, and Sherpa are nominated for Outstanding British Film and Documentary.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts unveiled the nominations for its film awards Friday at it headquarters in London.
Michael Fassbender is up for best actor for playing Steve Jobs.
All three filmmakers are nominated for best director at the BAFTAs, along with Adam McKay for financial-crisis drama “The Big Short” and Ridley Scott for space adventure “The Martian”.
Vikander was also nominated for Supporting Actress for her role in Ex Machina.
Best-actress contenders are Vikander; Brie Larson for “Room”; Cate Blanchett for “Carol”; Maggie Smith for “The Lady in the Van”; and Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” received four nominations for production design, sound, music and visual effects while James Bond adventure “Spectre” got nothing. The awards themselves take place on February 14th.
