Brie Larson wins best actress in a drama at Golden Globes
Nominees for the award included Saoirse Ronan for her role as Eilis Lacey in Brooklyn, Cate Blanchette for her role as Carol Aird in Carol, Rooney Mara for her role as Therese Belivet in Carol and Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener for The Danish Girl. This is her first Golden Globe.
“Room” has been a transformative experience for Brie Larson, victor for motion picture drama actress.
She said: “I think this is Brie Larson’s year, it should be”.
Speaking on stage after collecting her trophy, Larson told the crowd: “Thank you so much. Bradley and I feel very safe when we’re acting together, and it’s the same with Bob, our dynamic is great and he’s always been very protective and paternal”. But Larson, who also starred alongside Amy Schumer in the Golden Globe-nominated comedy Trainwreck, was considered the front-runner. “I feel very protected, like I have Joan of Arc armor on”, she joked. “Gerda has a certain kind of strength to her, and it’s quite empowering, quite forward, and a lot of energy”. Blanchett was one of the strongest contenders this year for her role as Carol Aird in the film Carol. “Thank you to my friends, my family who supported me… and thank you Alex [Greenwald, her long-time boyfriend], my love”. I urge Irish audiences to go and see this film. Also of Irish interest at the awards was the nomination for Northern Irish shot Game of Thrones for Best Drama Series and Eva Green was nominated for Best Actress Drama Series for Penny Dreadful, shot in Ardmore Studios in Bray.
