Brit Johanna Konta beats Wozniacki in Miami Open final
“I got incredibly lucky”, Federer said.
The Australian’s force and momentum forced Federer to remain on the central court at Crandon Park for more than three hours, which could prove to be decisive during his final against Nadal.
“It felt very good”. “Having a place here, training here in the offseason, playing kind of on home advantage, it’s special to be in my first finals here”.
“I kept fighting and believing, tried to stay aggressive.it was a nailbiter and could have gone either way”.
Kyrgios increased pressure on Federer and broke his serve in the seventh game, after several errors on the Swiss player’s part.
The 25-year-old will face Caroline Wozniacki for the title.
“I think quite honestly there wasn’t any key moment in that match”, Konta assessed.
“I just thought: ‘Eventually it’s just going to catch up with me”. I needed a little more time and a little more experience to accumulate the knowledge that I have and re-use it in my matches.
Wozniacki dropped a 62-minute opening set against the tournament second seed before turning on the style to secure a 5-7 6-1 6-1 success. The boos rang out again as he hurled his racquet in frustration. But he did not and the second set was decided in another exciting tie break, in which Federer missed two match balls and Kyrgios won by 11-9.
Federer saved two match points in his quarterfinal win over Tomas Berdych. In the third game of Set 2, he faced five break points before holding, and it was the same story in the fifth game, a nine-minute marathon after taking treatment on his right arm.
It sets up a showpiece meeting with Caroline Wozniacki tonight and gives the British number one a chance to win her second title at this level – a “Premier Mandatory”.
In the first semifinal, Nadal won 6-1 and 7-5 to Italian Fabio Fognini. She’s one of the best athletes in the game.
“We’ll play another time and I’ll try my best to win”.
The partisan crowd roared every victor from Federer, chastised every emotional outburst from Kyrgios, yet the match was played with great mutual respect by the two men themselves. “He had mistakes obviously”.
“I’m not sure how I managed to do that”, Wozniacki said.
Federer beat Nadal in an Australian Open final thriller in January to claim an 18th Grand Slam title and he swept past Nadal in straight sets in the fourth round at Indian Wells en route to the title there.
Roger Federer’s run at the Miami Open was one point from ending.
Jepkosgei beat compatriot Violah Jepchumba by 30 seconds.
