Britain’s Next Prime Minister Will Be a Woman
Britain is on its way to getting its second female prime minister, after Tory members of parliament narrowed the race for leadership of the country’s ruling Conservative party.
“The decision we took on June 23 was a great moment in history”, she said at her campaign launch in July. Leadsom is in the race to lead the Conservative party after British Prime Minister David Cameron announced he would be standing down.
Michael Gove’s very public betrayal of Boris Johnson may not have won him the leadership of the Conservatives and with it the office of Prime Minister, but his contribution to securing a Leave vote at the European Union referendum means he is still popular among the Tory grass roots.
The result of the party ballot will be announced September 9.
“This vote shows that the Conservative Party can come together, and under my leadership it will”, Ms May told supporters.
Her prominent role in the Brexit campaign is seen as one of her main advantages in the ongoing contest for the Conservative leadership as it may play well with grassroots party members who have strong eurosceptic leanings.
Conservative MPs have been voting on who should replace David Cameron, after he announced he would be stepping down.
In a message on Twitter, Mr Gove said: “Thanks to all who supported me”.
Leadsom has put her 25 years’ experience working in financial services at the centre of her campaign to become leader, having spent a decade working at Barclays Bank and fund manager Invesco Perpetual.
She said: “At home we need to be working very hard to ensure we have got the diplomatic contacts and the ability to rein in those people who just want to do their own thing and expand their own activities outside of worldwide law”.
“No one needs to fear our decision to leave the European Union”, said Leadsom, a vocal member of the “leave” camp.
“The fact that she hasn’t had experience at the Cabinet table, hasn’t had much experience even as a junior minister – let’s face it she’s had just two years – I do think is a problem at this stage”.
Although Mrs May signed up to the Remain side, she maintained a low profile during the referendum campaign.
She also said on Thursday she did not like the gay marriage law brought in by Cameron, and would be committed to overturning a ban on fox hunting, both issues which resonate with traditional Conservatives. It had led May to urge her supporters to not vote tactically as she once again called for a “proper contest”.
Its official, Britain will once again have a female Prime Minister, the first in over half century since Margaret Thatcher, Sputnik reported.
In a speech to supporters, Leadsom vowed to “banish the pessimists” anxious about Brexit, and argued that that Britain could retain free trade with the European Union while simultaneously controlling immigration an unrealistic prospect, according to critics.
Andrea has wanted to be an MP since she was 13. “This is electing a prime minister”.
The news came as Mrs Leadsom was forced to defend her background amid claims that she had misrepresented her economic expertise on her CV.
