Britain welcomes PM Theresa May who’s tasked with European Union leave
May has additionally noted that she wishes to lead the country in the direction of civil justice, that she will govern for the people instead of the “privileged few” and has stressed the need to “build a better Britain”, during her speech on Wednesday.
Her party prizes unionism, she said, and not just among England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, “but between all of our citizens, everyone, whoever we are and wherever we’re from”.
She has not said when she plans to trigger Article 50, the two-year mechanism of withdrawal from the trading bloc, despite German leader Angela Merkel calling for an urgent progress.
Cameron used his final day in office to try to stake a claim on a legacy beyond his status as the prime minister who – by gambling on a referendum – took Britain out of the EU.
Her main task – to negotiate Britain’s exit from the European Union – will be a daunting one.
He said: “I want to thank my children: Nancy, Elwin and Florence, for whom Downing Street has been a lovely home over these last six years”.
Not all believe her. As May spoke in front of her new residence, a small band of pro-Brexit demonstrators down the street chanted “Theresa May, don’t delay!”
May is something of an unknown quantity internationally, but European Council president Donald Tusk said he looked forward to a “fruitful working relationship” with her.
“Nothing is really impossible if you put your mind to it”, Cameron said.
How did we get here?
Buckingham Palace has released an image of May offering a deep curtsey before the monarch, denoting that she has accepted the queen’s invitation to form a government.
President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Boris Johnson will likely be “more diplomatic” as the head of the British Foreign Office than his predecessors, the RIA Novosti news agency reported on Thursday.
What lies ahead for May?
She took the first steps in that process shortly after assuming the mantle.
Downing Street said on Saturday that arts minister Ed Vaizey, a friend of Cameron, had left the government.
Theresa May has asked European leaders for time to prepare for the negotiations to take Britain out of the EU but restated her commitment that “Brexit means Brexit”.
The latter post is a newly created one also known as the Brexit secretary.
Ms May, who backed Remain in the referendum, handed top Cabinet posts to Leave campaigners.
Wednesday marked a new beginning for both politicians.
Hammond told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We will face some challenges in the short term in managing the economy”.
He’d got one big thing wrong – the referendum on leaving the European Union, on which he gambled and lost.
