British Airways computer problem causes delays at multiple airports
Passengers faced an hour’s delay at Newcastle Airport due to knock-on effects of BA’s check-in problems in Heathrow and Gatwick.
Angry travelers waited in check-in queues for hours while the airline fell back on the old school method of handwriting records, boarding passes and baggage labels.
In a statement to the BBC, BA said “We are checking in customers at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports this morning, although it is taking longer than usual”.
Passengers at several United States airports complained of lengthy delays at check-in, bag drop and, once emplaned, to aircraft on the apron.
The carrier, owned by International Consolidated Airlines Group icagy , had to field complaints from people stuck in long queues at airports from Toronto to San Francisco to London.
“We’ve experienced some problems today, which our IT teams are working to resolve as quickly as possible”, the airline said Tuesday via Twitter, without specifying what had caused the systems failure.
Travelers in the US said British Airways representatives had told them a system failure had been going on for hours and was global. However, the number of flights that have been affected has not yet been reported.
“We are sorry for the delay to their journeys”, the airline added.
The airline’s problems come barely a month after US carrier Delta Air Lines Inc. suffered a global outage that caused it to cancel 2,300 flights.
However, you are asked to go to BA’s Manage My Booking and check in online as normal, and then head to the airport.
While some reports suggest that the system outage was across airports in the U.S., a few other reports citing passengers said the problem was being experienced worldwide.
Early reports suggested that the problem might be a global one, but the airline said that that was not the case.
Black Lives Matter U.K. confirmed the protest, saying they were highlighting “the U.K. environmental impact on the lives of black people locally and globally”. Although the check-in was slow and long she mentioned that the staff handled the situation thoroughly.
