British IndyCar driver Justin Wilson in coma after being hit by debris

It was a mixed bag of the worst kind for Andretti Autosports, a win and driver critically injured.

Impact from the crash sent pieces of the auto flying into the air as approaching drivers passed by.

Wilson, 37 from Sheffield, appeared to be hit by debris after a vehicle in front crashed into a wall. Safety crews were on the scene nearly immediately. The 37-year-old Britain was transported to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pa., IndyCar officials said. He was able to exit his vehicle and was treated for a foot injury.

Hunter-Reay was subdued in the winner’s circle as Pocono Raceway and its fans fell silent.

Wilson, a married father of two daughters, lives in Colorado with his wife, Julia. “Just to be an innocent bystander like that and get hit in the head with a nose cone is a scary thought”.
