British IndyCar driver Justin Wilson in coma after being hit by debris
It was a mixed bag of the worst kind for Andretti Autosports, a win and driver critically injured.
Impact from the crash sent pieces of the auto flying into the air as approaching drivers passed by.
Wilson, 37 from Sheffield, appeared to be hit by debris after a vehicle in front crashed into a wall. Safety crews were on the scene nearly immediately. The 37-year-old Britain was transported to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pa., IndyCar officials said. He was able to exit his vehicle and was treated for a foot injury.
Hunter-Reay was subdued in the winner’s circle as Pocono Raceway and its fans fell silent.
Ryan Hunter-Reay scoring his second win of the season was the least surprising aspect of the ABC Supply 500 from Pocono Raceway, but the Andretti Autosport-Honda ace’s celebrations were muted as he, along with the whole IndyCar paddock, awaited medical updates on his part-time teammate Justin Wilson.
Justin Wilson is a great friend of the entire TFL team. With Dixon P11, things were looking good for the Colombian as the race approached half distance. “So I’ll think about that”.
Australian Will Power, who finished fourth, is 61 points back. Polesitter Helio Castroneves paced 24 laps, but crashed in Turn 1 on a restart on lap 167. After they climbed out of their wrecked cars Rahal lectured Vautier on the track.
“We were taking it very slow”.
“We know he’s not the sharpest guy around here”, Rahal said. It’s just a shame for this Steak ‘n Shake team going into this championship second in the points right now. “I wish I could go see him”. That brought out the 12th caution of the day with three laps to go and the race finished under yellow. “We just hope for the best”.
Hunter-Reay said he was told Wilson was unconscious and not responding when he was airlifted to the hospital. “Why would you do something like that?’ He has no answers”. He has no answers. But I’m not going to stop trying to improve it. We’re racing hard, we’re racing IndyCars and it’s fast. “We’ll go to Sonoma in attack mode”.
“It’s a tough one right now”.
Wilson, a married father of two daughters, lives in Colorado with his wife, Julia. “Just to be an innocent bystander like that and get hit in the head with a nose cone is a scary thought”. I was as happy as I could be in the vehicle. Soon after, Ed Carpenter and James Jakes made contact on the front straight.
