British Open 2015: Australian Marc Leishman fires tournament-best round to
Johnson, coming off a crushing loss at the U.S. Open, was at 10-under 134.
For the first time, he missed the cut in the US Open and the British Open in the same season, and neither was close.
Saturday’s brief passage of play was a damaging one for leader Dustin Johnson who had returned to the edge of the 14th green that he had reached in two the previous night. Despite a shaky putter, he’s within five shots of the top spot.
Here’s how not to get off the tee at the incredibly hard Road Hole.
“It’s kind of amusing”, he said. Louis Oosthuizen (70) and Jason Day (71) joined the large group at 7-under 137 that included Adam Scott and Zach Johnson, who finished Friday.
Jordan Spieth, aiming to win his third straight major and keep alive his hopes of a grand slam, was heard to say on the course: “We never should have started”. “It’s just that it wasn’t getting through the wind”, he said.
“Every aspect of your game is challenged”, Johnson said. The winner of the last seven majors has held the 36-hole lead.
But when his final putt fell – at 9:53 p.m. – the cheers erupted all over again.
– England’s Danny Brooks delivered a hole-in-one on No. 11, the tournament’s first ace at St. Andrews since 1990. Spieth three-putted for par.
As Woods finished up his postround interview, he was asked if he thought about that walk toward the 18th green and the fact that it would be a long time before the next time he does it. “I still believe I can win this tournament”, Spieth said. Sunday’s third round, which might be a bit dodgy because of rain, will lead to the second Monday regulation finish in tournament history. “Dustin is not letting up…” Dustin is going to shoot a good round tomorrow with less wind, and I’m going to need to shoot a great round to give myself a chance.
Saturday brought more than 10 hours’ delay to the tournament, which ran for 32 minutes before officials agreed wind gusts that neared 50 mph made the course unplayable.
Spieth, who managed to par the 14th to stay at five under, at least was not tangibly damaged by the brief on-course spell.
He actually said, “I felt like I was playing well enough to win this event”.
With the exception of playoffs, 2015 marks the second time in 144 competitions the Open would extend beyond Sunday.
Ultimately, what mattered was the finish.
STAT OF THE ROUND: Tiger Woods missing successive major championship cuts after slumping to seven over and a tie for 147th in the 156-man field.
Willett, meanwhile, also came to the golf course to practice.
Lawrie hasn’t come close at the British Open since, finishing no higher than 26th place, but he has a real shot at becoming the oldest Open champion – breaking the record of Old Tom Morris by 98 days.
