British Prime Minister David Cameron Leaves The Political Stage
Johnson had been at the forefront of the so-called Leave campaign, but after its triumph abruptly pulled out of the contest to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron, who left office earlier Wednesday.
Her party prizes unionism, she said, and not just among England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, “but between all of our citizens, everyone, whoever we are and wherever we’re from”. She appointed Former Mayor of London Boris Johnson as the country’s new Foreign Secretary.
“If you are in a working class family your life is much harder than many in Westminster realise”, she said.
In his final appearance in Parliament as British Prime Minister, David Cameron opened with the quip that “apart from one meeting in the afternoon with the Queen, my diary is remarkably light”.
Philip Hammond has been appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer and former chancellor George Osborne has resigned from Government, Downing Street has announced.
He then went to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to the Queen, who will then formally appoint Theresa May as his replacement.
May had emerged as an unchallenged candidate after her only opponent, Andrea Leadsom, withdrew from the race on Monday.
He has long advocated leaving the European Union, a plan he will now be in charge of implementing following Britain’s vote to quit the bloc.
“Following the referendum, we face a time of great national change”, May said outside her new Downing Street home after accepting the invitation of the Queen to form the new government.
Soon later, Theresa May will choose a new cabinet which would likely include prominent figures from both sides of the European Union referendum debate as she ventures to unify the party.
“It has not been an easy journey and of course we have not got every decision right, but I do believe that our country is much stronger”, he said. “I will miss the barbs of the opposition”, Cameron said, promising to watch future exchanges as a regular Conservative Party lawmaker on the back benches.
AFTER her endorsement by Queen Elizabeth II as United Kingdom’s (UK’s) Prime Minister, Mrs. Theresa May yesterday settled down to government business.
“Clearly now we have a massive opportunity in this country to make a great success of our relationship with Europe and with the world and I’m very excited to be asked to play a part in that”, he told the BBC. David Davis, a Conservative MP who was one of the most vocal “Brexit” supporters, was given a newly created post to oversee the divorce talks with Brussels for the U.K.to exit the EU.
“When we take the big calls we will think not of the powerful, but you; when we pass new laws we will listen not to the mighty, but to you; when it comes to taxes we will prioritize not the wealthy, but you”, she said.
