Brock Osweiler felt “comfortable” in first National Football League start

Osweiler was clean, unlike Manning, who has had turnovers all season. By all appearances, it was a tenuous marriage. But his best day came with Broncos backup Brock Osweiler.

One week after being benched, Peyton Manning did not make the start on Sunday for the Denver Broncos against the Chicago Bears.

Osweiler’s mother and father were in the crowd at Soldier Field and he said: “My parents are the two most supportive parents in the world, my brother was here as well, my wife was here – it’s a very special family day”.

Sometimes your coach puts his team in the best position to win, sometimes he doesn’t.

The Bears’ defense hung tough forcing two punts on Denver’s final two drives, but the offensive drive for Cutler and Co. squeezed between the two Broncos possessions didn’t go as planned.

“It did not look like a guy in his first game out”, coach Gary Kubiak said.

Osweiler, who was a second-round Draft pick in 2012, told reporters: “Today is not about me”. The game was tied in the third quarter when the TD pass by Shorts made it 17-10. Instead, it was a declaration that the Broncos wouldn’t be beholden to a quarterback making more than $20 million per season.

The Broncos will use Osweiler’s audition, which is likely to extend another week, to determine his value as a pending free agent. Manning may hold all of the major passing records, but, in today’s climate, championships are the only achievements that truly matter.

Well, at least that was what several of them pointed to as a bonding moment for a team that had lost two straight games and was going on the road with its regular starting quarterback, Peyton Manning, sitting at home injured. Manning had been just as disappointing – his 17 interceptions were the highest total in the league.

Against the Bears with Osweiler, the Broncos ran their first 11 plays from under center. “But he kept his composure, and then would come back and make the next play”.

Kansas City’s 346-pound defensive lineman Dontari Poe was sent in at full-back for a one-yard touchdown run, the first of his career, in the match against San Diego – which finished in a 33-3 success for the Chiefs. The touchdown was a 48-yard pass play from Osweiler to Demaryius Thomas. Osweiler threw a strike to Cody Latimer on a great route that looked pretty pro to me. More importantly, and impressively, Osweiler never turned the ball over while Cutler gave away an interception and a fumble. It was interesting to see how many blitzes the Broncos utilized this week after two weeks when they blitzed more frequently than their average of fewer than 50 percent of snaps.

Rather than kicking the field goal at 4th-and-goal, Fox elected to go for it. He lined up quarterback Jay Cutler in a shotgun, with a rollout play to the right side. We’ll play great defense; we’re consistent in what we’re doing there. “I don’t think anything changed [after the drive]”. “I’m not going to lie, I’ve pondered it a little bit, but I try not to think about it too much. And that’s a good combination”.

For example, it might not be a bad idea to start Osweiler against Tom Brady and the Patriots next Sunday night.
