Broken Record: Hottest August, Hottest Summer, Hottest Year To Date
The month tied January 2007 as the third-highest departure from normal for any month on record. The records go back to 1880. Meteorologists say 2015 is a near certainty to eclipse 2014 as the hottest year on record.
This year alone has seen month after month of NOAA records, which scientists are attributing to climate change.
Earlier this year, NOAA predicted that 2015 would be the hottest year ever.
The continual dominoing broken heat records risk swirling into sweaty monotony, and this week may have been no different, if it weren’t for the three-in-one August news-and that 11 Republican Congressmen issued a resolution proclaiming that climate change is real and worth addressing.

Last month was the hottest August ever recorded on Earth.
From January to August, global temperatures soared 1.51 degrees above average. The map below shows a few purple spots of cooler-than-average temperatures-notably the U.S. Midwest-and plenty of record-breaking red. August makes that even more likely, Arndt said.

The global average sea surface temperature also broke all records for the month, with much of the eastern and equatorial Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and parts of the Atlantic experiencing record warmth.
