Broncos beat Newton’s Panthers again
Helmet-to-helmet hits on Cam Newton resulted in just one penalty on the Denver Broncos during their 21-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.
Still feeling disrespected despite bringing home the Lombardi Trophy, members of Denver’s nasty defense pledged to keep serving as the Broncos’ vicious vanguard in 2016. “Some of them were hits that most certainly should have drawn flags”.
Only, instead of championship rings, their latest clubbing of Cam Newton will surely come with some hefty fines.
On Friday, the National Football League and Panthers coach Ron Rivera stated that the quarterback underwent proper protocol in determining whether he suffered a concussion on a fourth-quarter hit by Darian Stewart that sent him hard to the ground.
The NFL will review how the Panthers’ medical team handled a hit to Cam Newton’s head during Carolina’s loss to Denver in the season opener. Newton found Kelvin Benjamin for a 16-yard gain that eventually set up the potential winning attempt for Gano.
“I haven’t slept much, I couldn’t believe we won the game with some of the things that we did, some of the mistakes that we made”, he said with a head-shaking laugh. “We can hit him in the legs sometimes, but his legs are strong”, Marshall said.
Yet the question I had immediately – and that sentiment was echoed by countless others on social media soon after – was whether Newton should have been for the sake of his own health. “It’s OK, though, I figured that some type of repercussion would happen”. Marshall should expect to see a fine for his hit next week.
“I’m just super confident in the group of guys we have offensively”, he said. Multiple times during the contest Newton took hard hits to the head, even appearing to have his bell rung on one occasion.
“We’ve got to treat Cam like a quarterback”, Panthers tight end Greg Olsen said.
The national media can say what they want about this Broncos team. What are we supposed to do? “It was nothing intentional at all.In fact I got this blood on my finger”.
The Broncos walloped several of the game’s elite QBs on the way to their title last season, holding Aaron Rodgers to the worst performance of his career and putting the hurt on Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady and Newton in the playoffs. “They ran the ball well and their offensive line did a nice job, and that’s on us”.
Gary Kubiak didn’t flinch when Trevor Siemian threw two interceptions in his first National Football League start, and neither did the no-longer-unknown quarterback.
“I prayed about it, man”, Stewart said.
Marshall said the move surprised him but he doesn’t regret his actions. “But when you deliberately target and when you’re constantly being hit after the ball is out, I question the intent of the defensive player, and I question the official who, basically, if he does not warn them, lets the flow of the game continue”. And then sometimes you’re going to hit him in the head. “I’ve been getting a lot of hell for that”.
It’s only natural that the officials see Newton, as imposing a quarterback as there is at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, in a different light than his mostly smaller counterparts. “I’m like, this is a heavy dude”. “That’s what we try to bring every week to make everybody fear us”. When you see the Denver Broncos on your schedule, you know it is going to be a dog fight and you will leave the game beaten and bruised. “We saw him limping throughout the game so that running stuff, you can’t do that all game”.
