Broncos Offensive Play of the Week: Nine and a half seconds
The big question for Denver fans waking up on Monday morning is, what happened?
To kick or not to kick? .
Although it took a ricocheted field goal from Chiefs kicker Cairo Santos to get the Chiefs the win, the Broncos’ decision to go for a 62-yard field goal on the possession before has been the talk of the National Football League world on Monday. “Just an awesome game”. It was also an incredibly risky proposition. Hill was initially ruled down at the one yard line, and the clock almost expired before the official chose to initiate a booth review that eventually overturned the call.
With the game tied at 27, the Broncos got a first down on the Chiefs’ 44-yard line with 2:40 remaining.
As a result, after the missed kick, the Chiefs got the ball back with over a minute to play and a timeout in their back pocket. I don’t know. But we’re going to try to win, and I’ve seen B-Mac do that many times in practice.
The defending Super Bowl champs could find themselves fighting for a wild card now. Denver found its rhythm and managed to take the lead in the fourth. In Kansas City, the game earned a 41.0/60 rating, the second-best of any Chiefs game on the program behind only its November 17, 2013 loss in Denver (51.5/72). The loss drops Denver down to the seventh seed, just outside the playoff seeding, and bumped Miami into the sixth and final spot.
Smith missed Kansas City’s November 6 game with a concussion and since his return two weeks ago, nobody had been overwhelmed. The AFC West has made the same kind of transformation the NFC West made a few years ago before slipping back to mediocrity.
Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian had a stellar performance against Kansas City’s tough defense. He did not want Siemian to play OK.
Carr left the game at one point after injuring his right pinky while fumbling a snap.
Denver led 13-10 at halftime and pushed the advantage to 20-10 on Clinton Portis’ 65-yard run. There were times when Chiefs cornerback Phillip Gaines had trouble locating either the receiver or the ball. In fact, it was a whopping 37% lower than New England-Denver’s 16.2/26 in 2015.
Nearly 300 yards passing with three touchdowns and 113 rushing yards in a road loss to the Miami Dolphins had Kaepernick rolling the clock back to 2013 when he was one of the best quarterbacks in all of fantasy. Brandon McManus’ try had the distance but hooked left, giving the Chiefs the ball at midfield. Also, while K.C. was out of timeouts, there was still the two-minute warning left, so – even if Fowler did take a knee near the goal line and the Broncos chose to run the clock out before kicking a chip shot field goal on fourth down – there still would have been some time left.
But about that first three or so quarters: “There’s a lot to learn from that perspective”. “He made a lot of plays with his feet”.
Their best passing game of the season was squandered. It played a key factor in keeping Denver’s offense backed up in its own territory for most of the night.
By the end, Denver’s defense wasn’t looking all that great against Alex Smith and Co., frankly. Smith kept throwing short passes and calling run plays. So what changed in the second half? He joined Peyton Manning (four times) and John Elway as the only Broncos in history to throw for at least 350 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
But if the Chiefs are going to make something of their season, Houston has to be in their lineup. Charcandrick West went eight yards in three carries.
After the game, Kubiak said that he wanted to go for the win, and Broncos players supported him for it.
Add in an 86-yard free kick return for a touchdown by Tyreek Hill, and Chiefs special teams had a memorable night.
Assuming that they do make it to the postseason, how much damage can this team actually do?
Let’s call it the “Gale Sayers hat trick”: a receiving, rushing and kick return touchdown. But it wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter that the game really opened up. After recording three sacks in this game, he now has 12.5 on the year. Against the Minnesota Vikings he was targeted just once for no receptions as the Lions focused on trying to protect QB Matthew Stafford from a revitalized Vikings pass rush. Like Houston, Miller wreaked havoc in this game. Both teams traded punts back and forth, scarcely moving the chains as both defenses dominated the line of scrimmage.
The game ultimately reminded me of my first real memory of Kansas City football. Scoring 16 points will not help you beat Atlanta.
