Broncos place exclusive franchise tag on Miller
Next Tuesday, Peyton Manning will be owed $19 million in base salary and another $2.5 million in bonus money – if he is still on the Denver Bronco roster.
Worse, Manning — knowing the Broncos want to move on — could sign a one-year deal with a quarterback-needy team. The deadline is approaching for when the Broncos have to either release him, or his 2016 salary of $19 million becomes guaranteed. All the while there is another long season of baseball upon us as 30 teams gear up for what they hope will be their “Next Year” (all the teams except the Royals that is, who hope this season will end just like their last one did).
Getting a deal done for Miller would give the Broncos a lot of flexibility in terms of what they can do with Malik Jackson and Brock Osweiler, who appear to be next in the line of priority for them.
Peyton Manning should go up to the Broncos and offer to play for $5 million next year.
The NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns is hanging up his cleats, according to The Denver Post’s Woody Paige. He surely knows that he’s not the player he once was, and 2015 was a rough year for him on the field when it came to his play. “That’s why he’s going to have the time he needs and it’s basically going to be up to him”, Broncos general manager and former quarterback John Elway said.
Time is running out for Manning and his current employer. Kubiak said he had no feeling which way Manning could lean and said he wanted to be sensitive to both parties during the decision-making window, which began after the Super Bowl on February 7 and ends next week.
Elway said the Broncos have exchanged multiple proposals with Miller’s representatives since the Broncos’ win in Super Bowl 50. The expectation is that Manning will make his final decision next week. Manning has an NFL-record five MVP awards.
Let’s face it, Peyton and Eli may now have the same amount of Super Bowl victories, but Eli will never be as good of a quarterback as Peyton was (assuming he retires). But we want him to take his time and we’ll work from there.
“As far as I know, that’s gonna start after the season, as far as my role”, Manning said (via The Big Lead). Manning had only a month to deliberate his retirement, but he already had indicated to family and close friends, and Bill Belichick, that this most likely was his last rodeo.
There is clearly no real loyalty between Peyton Manning and the city of Denver outside of the Papa John’s investments.
