Broncos to call LB Miller in bid to restart negotiations
The Denver Broncos and their star linebacker are stuck over guaranteed money.
The Denver Broncos and Von Miller are back at the negotiating table this week, per Mike Klis of 9News, and an improved offer is on the table.
Miller has agreed to the overall value of the contract, the total amount non-guaranteed and guaranteed money combined, but wants closer to $60 million in guaranteed money while the Broncos initially wouldn’t offer him any more than $38.5. General manager John Elway spoke with Miller’s agent Joby Branion, according to an National Football League source. If the two sides do not reach agreement by the 2 p.m. Friday deadline, Miller would not be able to play the 2016 season on anything but the $14.26-million franchise tag salary.
Miller, the MVP of Super Bowl 50, received the Broncos’ exclusive franchise tag on March 1. But until this time, there has been a huge gap between what the Broncos and Miller believed was fair in terms of money up front and fully guaranteed cash.
The team is also in talks with WR Emmanuel Sanders, who will make about $5.6M in 2016, the past year of his contract.
The team begins its title defense in their first regular season game on September 8 against reigning NFC champion and Super Bowl 50 opponent Carolina Panthers. The Eagles gave defensive tackle Fletcher Cox a six-year, $103 million contract extension – like Miller, he was not a free agent – with $63 million guaranteed and $55.55 million paid out in the first nine months.
