Brother of Syrian boy in iconic Aleppo photo dies
Omran, a bloodied Syrian boy in Aleppo, has miraculously survived an airstrike that destroyed his house and obliterated his entire neighborhood last Wednesday.
The hospitals are routinely hit by bombs, so many have started operating underground and using code names.
A nurse who treated the fearless mite said he didn’t shed a single tear the whole time – until he saw his mum in the ward.
Aleppo, split into rebel- and government-controlled areas, has become the focus of the fighting in Syria. On Wednesday evening, an informant relayed word of a warplane taking off from the Russian air base at Hmeimim.
The photo of Omran Daqneesh, which was taken by photojournalist Mahmoud Raslan was a chilling reminder of the amount of violence and devastation that is occurring in Aleppo.
Konashenkov said Qaterji was particularly out of bounds for Russian strikes because it adjoins two of the humanitarian corridors Moscow has opened for residents to flee. The second one turned little Omran’s life upside down.
Rescue workers and media personnel arrived soon after the strike and pulled out victims from the rubble. Abu al-Ezz said they do that “because we are afraid security forces will infiltrate their medical network and target ambulances as they transfer patients from one hospital to another”. “His body was covered in dust in addition to blood on his face from a wound on his forehead, and the blood mixed with the dust”, the surgeon said.
At least five other children died in the bombing, according to NBC News.
An hour after his rescue, the badly damaged building the boy was in completely collapsed.
He also suggested however that the area where Omran was may not have been bombed at all, citing footage of unbroken windows.
“It was as if he was asleep”.
“It is very painful to watch your children falling in front of your eyes”, said the father, who asked only to be identified as Abu Ali – which means father of Ali – for fear of reprisal from the Syrian government.
