Browns fire coach Mike Pettine after 3-13 season
While the new Cleveland Browns general manager and coach may want to give Manziel a second chance, he is on thin ice with ownership and other team executives.
The Browns went 10-22 during Pettine’s two seasons in charge.
Pettine never seemed to stand much of a chance as head coach, although he was primarily responsible for the selection of cornerback Justin Gilbert, one of many failed first round picks of the recent regime. “Mike and Ray understand”.
They can continue with him and hope he gets his personal and professional life together.
“I don’t think any of us anticipated going 3-13”, Haslam said.
Haslam said the team will begin an immediate search for its eighth full-time coach of the expansion era.
“It’s tougher every time it happens because you realize you are closer to your end”, he said.
Haslam’s already fired three coaches and three GMs since buying the team from Randy Lerner in 2012.
“I think he’s a good coach”. We are all disappointed with where we are and I take full responsibility. “It’s been very humbling and it’s been a lot harder than we thought”.
As another regular season comes to a close, the Browns are in the all-too-familiar position looking for yet another head coach to lead the team. He’s an attorney and has been in the National Football League for 11 years – eight with Jacksonville and three with Cleveland.
The Browns will reportedly also consider promoting Sashi Brown, the current executive vice president/general counsel, to take over the football operations.
As a result, it’s hard envisioning who might be a contender to succeed Pettine. “It is a bottom-line business and you guys don’t have a column in the newspaper for moral victories”. His resume is even worse when you look at his record over his last 21 games, notching a putrid 3-18 record. Most good organizations, not just in football or pro sports but in general, have a clear Table of Organization.
It hasn’t helped that the Browns lacked talent, especially offensive playmakers and that was Farmer’s fault. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said he would have liked to pick Manziel during the 2014 Draft, but was convinced by his scouting team not to. Pettine’s tenure was marred by off-field distractions, largely centered around star wide receiver Josh Gordon (suspended, didn’t play this year) and quarterback Johnny Manziel (rehab, benched for partying).
Pettine said the ESPN report Friday that he asked Haslam for a status update and didn’t get an answer was “not accurate”.
Manziel was spotted in Las Vegas on January 2.
This is obviously just a report at this point, but this could be a chance for both Cleveland and Manziel to start over.
