Browns hire Bengals’ Hue Jackson as coach
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, who somehow convinced Jackson not to get on a plane to NY, probably didn’t talk much about patience while trying to convince Jackson to stay in Cleveland.
Jackson acknowledged talking about Manziel with owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, head of football operations Sashi Brown and chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta but wouldn’t reveal the plan. “He’s going to have those guys fired up and they’re going to love playing for him”. “I know that, I believe that and I expect that”. Manziel, who checked into rehab to deal with alcohol problems prior to the season, was then seen paryting in disguise in Las Vegas prior to the end of the season. He has blown off the team, missed team functions and even went out in a disguise to avoid being detected. He replaces Mike Pettine, who was sacked on January 3 after going 10-22 in his two seasons.
“That’s those coaches”, he said during his introductory news conference. From quarterbacks coach in Baltimore in 2009 to offensive coordinator in Oakland in 2010 to head coach in Oakland in 2011.
In reality, and to purposely contradict myself, it’s all moot and really doesn’t mean anything more than an opportunity to bring attention to the fact that the Dolphins opted to go with their top choice and not interview Jackson first.
“I came here to win”, he said. Hopefully, for Jackson’s sake, the Browns are a little bit more patient with him than the Raiders were.
The Browns own the second overall pick in the 2016 draft and probably will have an opportunity to select the top-rated quarterback.
Jackson starred as a quarterback at Dorsey High and Glendale Community College before finishing at the University of the Pacific.
He was coordinator at Southern California when Palmer played there and became the No. 1 pick in the draft.
Jackson has had a perch with an AFC North rival from which to view the quarterback’s two-year career, and apparently he’s not a fan of what he saw.
Jackson is well respected by the Ravens, and they probably don’t feel too bad that the Bengals are losing their offensive coordinator of the past two seasons. He also helped the Bengals make the playoffs but they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card game on Saturday.
It remains unclear whether the Browns simply would release Manziel or try to dangle the lightning-rod 23-year-old in a trade.
Jackson has a strong track record of quarterback development.
