Browns name Hue Jackson as National Football League coach
A person familiar with the decision says the Browns are hiring Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as their next coach.
Jackson was supposed to be on a plane to New Jersey tonight to talk to the Giants, but Haslam nipped New York’s plan in the bud.
“He has been one of the cornerstones of this organization and this football team”, Jackson said.
“I’m glad he said that”, Jackson said, smiling and grabbing Haslam’s arm.
The 50-year-old has spent the past two seasons directing Cincinnati’s offense.
The 49ers interviewed Jackson on Sunday but never presented him with a contract offer, according to league sources.
This was followed by the Browns agreeing to hire Jackson as their new coach on Wednesday. “He embodies all the qualities that will provide strong leadership for our football team”.
In a written statement, Haslam said Jackson is, “relentless in trying to find ways to put his players in the best position to succeed”. OK, here are five takeaways from Jackson’s introductory press conference.
As Bengals offensive coordinator, Jackson got an up-close look at Manziel for his first start as a rookie and again this season.
As cold as the weather was outside of the Browns training facility in Berea – and it was frigid – the reception for Hue Jackson was just as warm on the inside. No one churns out coaches like the Factory of Sadness. The fourth since Jimmy Haslam bought the team in 2012. Manziel’s recently ended his second season by missing a scheduled medical treatment amid reports he was spotted in Las Vegas.
Jackson brings head coaching experience, knowledge of the AFC North and a knack for fixing quarterbacks to the Browns, who fired Mike Pettine following a 3-13 season. He added that the Browns “finally have a coach who at least is equipped to be the right one”. The Browns front office reportedly said that wouldn’t be a problem. In San Francisco, GM Trent Baalke has a similar power. “Then once we got to a certain point, he definitely got it. He got how good it was”. “It’s a process”, Jackson said. “To me, that told me that this building is electric and they want to win and they expect to win and they understand that there’s a lot of work to do, but everybody is ready to roll up their sleeves and go to work”. In Seattle, running back Marshawn Lynch was a full participant in practice but Seahawks coach Pete Carroll cautioned that was no indication whether he would play against Carolina… It was Jimmy Haslam who did not attend the owners meeting in Houston so he could meet a second time with Jackson.
Jackson’s short tenure in Oakland will always be remembered for a certain trade he made. Manziel threw for 168 yards and a touchdown in the 31-10 loss.
I hope for Cleveland Browns fans that Jackson really is the answer and owner Jimmy Haslam leaves well enough alone. Many analysts believe it’ll be California’s Jared Goff.
Phillips, 40, went to prison in 2008 on a sentence of more than 31 years after he was convicted of twice choking his girlfriend in 2005 in San Diego and of driving his vehicle into three teens later that year after a pickup football game in Los Angeles.
From the moment he was hired, his former players and fellow coaches took to Twitter, television and even radio to laud the man just hired as the next head coach of the Browns.
