Browns QB McCown out for season
The Cleveland Browns, mired in a six-game slump and possibly headed for their worst season since 1999 when they finished 2-14, have to make another quarterback change before playing the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
“We’ll take everything into consideration and make the decision that’s best for the team”, Pettine said Wednesday.
The freakish set of twists and turns began with less than two minutes remaining when the Browns backup quarterback, Austin Davis (who was their third string quarterback last week behind Johnny Manziel and had not thrown a pass all season prior to the game) threw his first touchdown pass since Week 9 of last season with the St. Louis Rams.
In his eight games this season, McCown completed 186 of 292 passes for 2,109-yards, with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions and his final quarterback rating was 93.3.
A person familiar with the agreement says wide receiver Terrelle Pryor is expected to sign Tuesday with the Browns. “If he is not, then he won’t”, Pettine said.
Pryor confirmed the news on Twitter when he tweeted “Glad to be back to OH!!” I was saying, ‘If we get a block and it bounces my way, I’m going to take it to the end zone.’ Luckily it did.
Yesterday’s game was as sloppy as expected and at the same time, it was a close game, it was competitive, and the team with the better record came out on top despite significant injuries to their team.
But still, through all of this excruciatingly Browns-esque nonsense, they were about to win the game. Browns head coach Mike Pettine told reporters on a conference call that McCown did indeed suffer a broken collarbone and will subsequently be placed on season-ending injured reserve, as noted by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“I just wanted to drive in low and stick my hand up”, he said.
The same can’t be said of Manziel, whose future – immediate and long-term – remains cloudy. A year ago, McCown was 1-10 in starts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Despite how this season has turned out for the Ravens, this has to be one of the more impressive seasons this team has had in terms of dealing with adversity. He then grabbed his jersey and absolutely shredded it. In the background, another depressed and fed-up fan can be heard shouting, “I f***ing hate the Browns”.
Cornerback Justin Gilbert is in the concussion protocol, he said.
