Browns rookie WR Coleman continues to impress
Though Coleman’s catches stole the spotlight, Griffin’s throws were recognized as well.
Griffin has taken almost every snap with the first-team offense and has answered questions about his comfort in, and grasp of, Jackson’s system with a strong week. A scrimmage is a long way from a preseason game, which is a long way from the regular season, but when a quarterback plays in a scrimmage it’s better to have these results than the opposite.
Before the touchdown, the rookie darted down the left side of the field past veteran cornerback Tramon Williams and hauled in a 53-yard reception that got the Browns deep in the red zone. “I told him, ‘If you’re throwing the ball like that, you’re going to throw a lot of touchdowns this year'”.
Officially, the Browns are having a training camp competition to name their starting quarterback.
The best thing Griffin did for the coach: not turn the ball over. “If we can continue to improve and get better, then we’ll have a chance to be where we want to be”.
“I’ll never forget a year ago when he was with me in Cincinnati for a little while and wanted to be a quarterback”, he said. There was nothing not to like as Coleman has great hands and great speed to go along with RGIII’s big arm.
“I think I did decent, some plays that I messed up on”, Coleman said. That gives the Browns a player who led the league in receiving yards in 2013 to go with running backs Duke Johnson and Isaiah Crowell, tight end Gary Barnidge, first-round pick and wide receiver Corey Coleman as well as fellow receiver Andrew Hawkins.
A few other quick hits: Corey Coleman did not play today for precautionary reasons due to a “little hamstring issue” and Cameron Erving will be back “very soon”. “Has he shown some unquestioned ability?”
So when the two were combined on a flawless Saturday afternoon on campus after Pryor hauled in a 75-yard bomb for a touchdown, he really had no choice but to sprint across the south end zone, throw his arms up and spell out “O-H-I-O” to put a bow on a homecoming script that was nearly too good to be true.
The Orange and Brown Scrimmage ended in what was perhaps fitting fashion.
Jackson spoke plenty on his behalf.
“Anybody’s confidence needs to be restored when things haven’t happened the way you want them to”, Jackson said. “There’s an expectation for the line, the defense, the offense, and our guys have to meet that expectation”. I think we see the fruit of his hard work.
“That’s all you can ask for. There are still some ladders to climb, and we’re going to keep climbing them”.
