Browns soon to move on from Johnny Manziel
Now, on the fairly momentous occasion of the team introducing a new head coach (sure, they do it pretty much annually, but still), it’s as if Scheiner doesn’t work there anymore. Figured to be one of the hotter head coach candidates this offseason, the choice of Jackson to sign so quickly with the Cleveland Browns is something that we’ll all be scratching our heads at.
“Obviously [Browns owners] Jimmy and Dee Haslam for this opportunity, going through the process of meeting [executive vice president of football operations] Sashi Brown and [chief strategy officer] Paul DePodesta”.
His name, Hue Jackson, a coach who’s already won over Browns fans. Jackson follows in the footsteps of Mike Pettine, Rob Chudzinski, Pat Shurmur and Eric Mangini, who have all coached the Browns since 2010.
“I didn’t have any preconceived notions and my mind didn’t need to be changed”, Jackson said. “We got the right guy for the Cleveland Browns”.
NFL.com additionally reported that Steve Spagnuolo – a former Rams head coach – is expected to remain the Giants’ defensive coordinator. He said, “I love calling plays”.
The Browns announced on Wednesday that they have hired former Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as head coach.
The 50-year-old isn’t anxious about the track record of his predecessors. Now that everything’s officialy, Jackson will be headed to northern OH for his introductory press conference on Wednesday. “I can’t worry about what’s happened before me”. He had reportedly been the “clear front-runner” for the head coaching job with the 49ers and canceled an interview with the Giants that was scheduled Wednesday to take the Browns job.
“This is our man”, Haslam told them. Jackson spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Browns own the second overall pick in the 2016 draft and probably will have an opportunity to select the top-rated quarterback.
It remains to be seen what plans Jackson might have for Johnny Manziel, the troubled QB whose two seasons in Cleveland have been filled with controversy and more chaos than the Browns needed. Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton just posted the best performance of his five-year career before his thumb injury ended his season. The one with no general manager, but a baseball analyst that will only answer to the owner.
Jackson’s challenge in Cleveland will be turning around a team that can’t seem to get out of its own way.
The move was somewhat sudden given that Jackson first met with team officials Sunday in Cincinnati after Cincinnati’s hard 18-16 loss Saturday evening in the AFC Wild-Card Round.
One of the biggest issues the Browns have had over the years is competing within the AFC North Division.
Jackson oversaw a Bengals unit that ranked in the top 10 in yards per play and could score touchdowns inside the red zone and in goal-to-go situations.
Jackson didn’t shy away from Manziel as a topic and didn’t rule him out-at least in public. Other potential landing spots include the San Francisco 49ers and Rams.
Jimmy Haslam made the offer.
Jackson revamped Cincinnati’s offense.
