Browns still trying to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo
The Cleveland Browns stunned most of the football world on Thursday when they chose to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler.
According to Schefter, the move will open up $10 million in salary-cap space and save $16 million in cash for the Texans.
The Browns are still sitting on over $50 million in cap space after this move, so this move does not affect their spending power (this year or in the future) in any way. If the Browns hope to trade Osweiler and dump part of his salary, they probably will have to give up a pick or two, too.
Recent reports are saying that Houston Texans seems to be very determined to get Tony Romo from the Dallas Cowboys after trading QB Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns. It’s possible they’ll try to entice the Patriots to move the 25-year-old Garoppolo.
Osweiler, though, may not be around for long as the Browns may be planning to offer New England numerous draft picks for backup Jimmy Garoppolo. Instead of over-spending on players, teams will crave draft picks, a strategy the Patriots have used for the last decade-plus to consistently stockpile cheap talent and consistently reload rather than rebuild. “We are intent on adding competition to every position on our roster and look forward to having Brock come in and compete”. The duo join from Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers respectively. Following a 1-15 season, Cleveland owns the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, the No. 12 spot and six of the first 65 selections.
Church agreed to a four-year contract worth around $24 million.
So the Browns acquire Osweiler to take him off Houston’s books, and could even cut him today if they want. He can still run and he’s shown that he can still connect on the big plays like in the exhibition against the Atlanta Falcons with wide receiver Terrell Pryor.
Smith was released by the 49ers last week. To this point, the Browns have favored Mitchell Trubisky over Deshaun Watson, but Watson closed the gap some with a sensational combine, and still has two more chances to impress the Browns in a private workout and a visit to Cleveland.
