Browns trade with Broncos to land Houston CB Howard Wilson

The Cleveland Browns walked away from the 2017 NFL Draft as one of the consensus winners of the 3 day event but they didn’t stop there as they carried over their success into the undrafted free agent market as well.

Surprisingly, no one from Alabama was chosen until cornerback Marlon Humphrey went 16th to Baltimore. The Steelers have struggled to find a capable backup to Ben Roethlisberger and it’s possible that he could become the guy to fill in capably for a few games per season whenever Roethlisberger suffers the consequences of his rugged playing style.

Just because a certain player has an excellent college career, there is no guarantee he will be successful at the next level. This draft brought the sizzle. Garrett has the size, speed and weight to be an impact player right out of the gates for Cleveland.

The Texans have just one pick this round, at No. 169, so there’s awhile to wait for that just yet. That caused top-shelf defensive players to slide, and the Cardinals happily snapped up linebacker Haason Reddick, from Arians’ former employer, Temple.

By the way, that was the first time that three different teams traded up to get a QB in the first round on draft day. It does not take three years or even the oft-cited two to know whether a Shea McClellin or Kyle Long or Kyle Fuller or Alshon Jeffery or Leonard Floyd (or Adam Shaheen) can play, and the players in the early rounds are ultimately the make-or-break for a franchise on its drafts.

Don’t be fooled by the Patriots only selecting four players over the weekend. Expect the deepest positions in the draft – edge rusher, defensive back (both cornerback and safety), tight end and running back – to be well represented on Friday.

Well, OK, sometimes I like reading draft grades from other people and seeing their reasoning behind them, but I don’t personally like doing draft grades. Teams will have seven minutes in round two. But the second-round selection of a player much like first-rounder Christian McCaffrey was a bit curious.

Analysis: The Jets certainly liked their safeties and wide receivers in this draft, taking two of each in their first four selections.

The second-round selection of DeShone Kizer was savvy and a great example of the low-risk, high-reward moves the Browns should be making as they rebuild. “There were teams calling me at our pick, wanting to come up”.

Then again, one of the benefits of only winning one game means Cleveland was fortunate to lockup this year’s top overall pick, which they made a decision to use on former Texas A&M defensive standout Myles Garrett. Cleveland also used a sixth-round choice on DT Caleb Brantley, who is facing a misdemeanor battery charge for allegedly punching a woman.

Green: From the start, I was never sold on Garrett being the No. 1 pick. It moves pretty quickly, especially compared to the slow pace of rounds one through three. This is the day when the research and the time spent really kicks in.

Another NFL Draft has come and gone, and once again the great debate is on for which teams have hit a home run with their picks and which teams have failed.
