Bruce Jenner’s 1984 Olympic Torch going on auction block
The Associated Press reports that the torch carried by Caitlyn Jenner, formerly know as Bruce Jenner, through Lake Tahoe, Nevada, is going up for auction.
“This is the first major piece of Jenner memorabilia to surface, and we expect collectors every bit as significant as we think it is”.
The torch was sold by Bob Lorsch, a Los Angeles-based philanthropist and entrepreneur, who insured the participation of Bruce Jenner in torch relay on Nevada route and he ran 1,000 meters to finish out the relay.
The 24-inch torch will be offered by Heritage Auctions in Chicago during its Platinum Sports Auction on July 30, the auction house announced on Tuesday.
Heritage specialist Chris Ivy told the New York Post’s Page Six columnist: “This torch serves as a wonderful symbol that masculinity and femininity are not mutually exclusive”.
In this undated photo provided by Heritage Auctions, the 1984 Summer Olympics Torch that Bruce Jenner carried through Lake Tahoe, Nevada is shown. He adds that despite the decathlon being the ultimate proof of athletic prowess, “Jenner has played both gender roles masterfully”.
Caitlyn Jenner carried the torch through Lake Tahoe, Nevada during the opening ceremony of 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. Seven went to individuals and 42 to local organizations.
Jenner once again became a household name through the popular reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, appearing as the paterfamilias through a now-ended marriage to Kris Kardashian.
“As the 1976 Olympic decathlon champion, Jenner was the only celebrity runner designated during the 50-kilometer stretch that Caesars Tahoe sponsored”, Lorsch said. Vanity Fair ran glamour photos of him as Caitlyn. Caitlyn hasn’t commented on the torch auction, but is set to receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs next week.
