Bruins stay unbeaten on the road, stop Islanders
But Bruins forward Ryan Spooner intercepted the puck at the blueline and moved in for a shot that was blocked by de Haan’s defensive partner, Travis Hamonic, which then ricocheted over to a waiting Kemppainen. They’ll be hoping to snag that first home win of the season as they take on the Arizona Coyotes next Tuesday.
Jonas Gustavsson is 2-0 as a Bruins goaltender and is playing a lot better than Rask.
Matt Beleskey, out the last two games because of an upper-body injury, practiced Saturday with Chris Kelly and Jimmy Hayes. Several New York Mets players – including Daniel Murphy, Jonathon Niese and Steven Matz – attended the game. Boychuk played in his 400th career game. With Friday’s goal, Krejci has 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in seven games this season.
The Bruins are on a four game point streak as the head home to the TD Garden.
That odd trend continued Friday night, as the B’s picked up their third win of the season – all of which have come on the road – in the form of a 5-3 victory over the Islanders at Barclays Center.
“We didn’t do a good job of complementing each other”, Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “We have to be better”.
The final score was polished by a David Krejci empty net goal and a Thomas Hickey point shot through traffic.
The Bruins became more aggressive and took the lead with two goals late in the second period.
“It’s a weird game – a few buildings, you just can’t win”, said right winger Brett Connolly, who scored Boston’s first goal. David Pastrnak scored two minutes later after getting the rebound off of Adam Mquaid’s shot. Kemppainen made a nice pass and as Spooner tried to pass it back the puck deflected off the Islanders and went into the net.
The Islanders meanwhile look like the team many expected to see in the preseason as they are cruising along in the Metro division and are 4-1-1 on the year putting them two points back of the Rangers with two games in hand. Now we have to bring that same game at home.
Now it’s exclusively up to the Bruins to decide if their best win of the season to date is a hockey harbinger of more good things to come, or merely a sign that the potential is there for the Black and Gold if they want it. “We had a tough start to the season, but we’re coming on here and we’re starting to play a little better”. The assist gave Tavares at least a point for the fifth straight game, with three goals and six assists during that stretch.
– 27-year-old Bruins rookie Joonas Kemppainen tallied his first NHL goal after scoring 62 over nine seasons in the Swedish Elite League. That includes forechecking, which the B’s did exceptionally well in the second and third periods in Brooklyn.
“I thought our first period was one of those periods where we didn’t play hard enough in the D zone, and as a result of that, they managed to get a couple of goals on us”, offered Julien to the media after the game. “We have to be better”. The 22-year-old jumped on a puck that Brad Marchand had tossed into the slot and whacked it past Jaroslav Halak to give Boston a 1-0 lead at 9:51 of the first. First Josh Bailey on the power play, then Casey Cizikas on a tip-in reversed the 0-1 deficit.
