Bryan Fuller to revive Steven Spielberg’s ‘Amazing Stories’
In the first Golden Age of Television, anthology series were the go-to format for prestige nighttime programs.
Spielberg is reportedly not involved in this new iteration, and while it is still early days Fuller’s ability to combine horror, comedy, and earnest, heartfelt storytelling – he is the same person that created Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies, after all – seem to make him a flawless match for the kind of genre mix-and-match that the original show was known for. Under the Dome and Extant’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank will serve as co-executive producers. The show ran from 1985 to 1987, and in its brief run was nominated for 12 Emmy awards and won 5.
Universal Television is producing the fantastic Stories revival. That show ended this past summer. Given that Fuller has “American Gods” coming on Starz, we feel like this will likely be something that he can work on here and there, and then allow other people to take over for their own stories. Like the original, unbelievable Stories will tell an all-new story each week with no connection between them.
The United Kingdom series Black Mirror also uses this The Twilight Zone type of storytelling device. The CW was hoping to revive Tales from the Crypt in a similar fashion, but the reboot never got an official green light.
Entertainment Weekly broke the news of the return of wonderful Stories, which is being developed by at NBC.
Actor Hugh Dancy (L) and executive producer/creator Bryan Fuller wear flower crowns at the “Hannibal” Savor the Hunt panel during Comic-Con worldwide 2015 at the San Diego Convention Center on July 11, 2015 in San Diego, California. Though, without Steven Spielberg, will this even really be so incredible?
