Bryant wins NL Rookie of the Year
An invaluable part of the Astros as they battled toward their first postseason appearance since 2005, Correa hit.279/.345/.512 with 22 home runs and 68 RBI in 99 games. The only other player in major league history to attain those totals for homers, RBIs, doubles, runs and walks in his rookie season was Hall of Famer Ted Williams with the Boston Red Sox in 1939. In the minutes and hours after the announcement, Correa’s teammates Dallas Keuchel, Carlos Gomez, Collin McHugh, Jason Castro and manager A.J. Hinch showered down congratulations on Twitter, as they’re obviously quite proud of being able to take the field alongside him each night. “I certainly exceeded my expectations this year”. “We kind of brought ourselves together and learned from one another, and it really made the learning curve a lot easier for us”.
“So many people are truly deserving of this award and it’s definitely an honor for me to win it”, said Bryant. Though not considered as good defensively as Duffy, his overwhelming offensive stats – including 77 bases on balls – made Bryant the unanimous choice of the voters (two from each National League city).
“I don’t think there was any pressure for myself, just because you’re surrounded by (other young players)”, Bryant said.
Seeking their first championship since 1908, the Cubs were swept by the NY Mets in the NLCS.
As Baseball America’s No. 1 prospect heading into the season, Bryant did all this with a huge target on his back.
Houston’s only previous Rookie of the Year was Jeff Bagwell, who won the 1991 NL honor.
Bryant and Correa each earned the major league minimum salary of $507,500.
Bryant was left in the minors at the start of the season, despite showing his prodigious power during an outstanding spring training. I said it before: I think I played with a little chip on my shoulder this year. The players’ association, and Bryant’s agent Scott Boras, protested the decision to keep him in the minor leagues as a bush-league call that delayed the player’s status as a free agent until after the 2021 season.
