Bubba Watson has third Masters title in sights after WGC win
BUBBA WATSON could have been working in his candy store, instead of savouring the sweet taste of victory at the Dell World Match Play. Watson figured he hardly ever makes it this far in golf’s most fickle format, so it was a good problem to have. It was a terrible anticlimax, with Kisner’s game falling to pieces in the final.
“It bit me on the couple of holes today trying to figure it out with a few out-of-play balls”.
Watson raced out to a huge advantage against Kisner.
With two wins under his belt this season and renewed confidence in his game, Watson is on form at the right time and could have a chance to slip on a third green jacket. At the time of writing, he is three up through 12, and another step closer to taking the World No 1 position from Dustin Johnson, who crashed out in the first round. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it”, Thomas said.
In a friendly clash between two teams that won’t be at the World Cup, BetVictor’s Charlie McCann told EGR that 84 people predicted Gibraltar’s win over Latvia at 20-1.
Noren recovered from his dramatic defeat to beat Thomas 5 and 3 in the third-place match. And when things are working, his opponents are left scratching their heads at just how he gets his golf ball to do those insane things.
“I got off to a good start, really got it going”, Watson said.
In adding this victory to his 2014 WGC-HSBC Champions title, two-time Masters Tournament champion Watson becomes just the fifth player after Rory McIlroy, Ernie Els, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to win multiple Major Championships and WGCs.
Kisner is intense on the course and exceedingly grounded away from competition, while Watson is prone to bouts of mental lapses during rounds and let’s say, quirky behavior when he’s not carving drives into the great beyond.
Watson outlasted Brian Harman in a battle of Georgia southpaws and then won five of six holes to start the back nine to beat Kiradech Aphibarnrat, 5 and 3.
‘There was a lot of attention on becoming world number one and I allowed myself to get distracted, ‘ he admitted. If he had lost, both he and Suri would have finished pool play 2-1-0, and they would have gone to an immediate playoff where anything can happen (and Watson may not have moved on). He’s No. 3 on the points list, and he showed Jim Furyk that he can once again handle the pressure of match play against the best in the world.
The 34-year-old Garnett, a two-time victor last year on the Web.com Tour, finished at 18-under 270.
“I’m going to try to keep my head down – look like a zombie or whatever you want to call it – and be committed to every shot”. The PGA Tour shared a replay of the approach that set up his birdie putt.
We should know by now that with Watson, you have to expect the unexpected. What pleased him the most was staying focused on all but about four or five shots for the week, most of those exceptions on the 13th hole that didn’t suit his eye.
Now, Watson is not only a key component of the Masters narrative but already nearly certain to return to the Ryder Cup fold at the end of September. Just plays with his hands, pictures a shot, makes a decision.
